Chapter Ten

I woketo hair in my face and a cat meowing in my ear. Disoriented, I opened my eyes and remembered that I wasn’t alone in bed, and not just because Potato was standing on me.

“Hush, Potato. You’re fine.” It couldn’t be that late. I scrabbled for my phone and then squinted at the time.

“Oh, shit,” I said, sitting up and dislodging an extremely grumpy cat.

“What?” Esme asked, blinking at me. Well, I thought she was blinking at me, but I couldn’t see her through a veil of hair.

“It’s eleven. I can’t believe we slept in so late.” I rubbed my eyes. In spite of actually sleeping, I didn’t feel that rested. I did feel tingly and sore, like I’d been completely and fully worked over, so no complaints.

“I don’t go in until four,” she said. “So, I’m good. Did you have something due?”

I mean, I always had something due, but nothing that couldn’t wait a few hours until I’d gotten myself together. Or at least had some breakfast.

I lay back on the pillows and started petting Potato.

“Are you hungry?” I asked. “I can make some eggs or something.” I hadn’t planned on making her breakfast, so I hoped I did actually have some eggs. If all else failed, I had some pastries from Sweet’s in the freezer that I could bake in the oven.

“No, you don’t have to. You’ve already done so much. I should get home.” She made a face at the prospect. “At least Dad is at the store so I won’t have to answer invasive questions about where I was and what I was doing.”

Esme stood up and stretched her arms over her head, showing me a sliver of her belly.

“Does he do that?” I asked, watching her as she used one of my brushes on her hair, starting at the ends and working her way up. Her deft fingers wove a quick braid that she secured with the hair tie she’d used last night. I was never going to look at those things the same way again. For the rest of my life, I’d imagine the incredible girl with the tattoos pulling her hair back with one before putting her mouth on me.

Esme changed out of my clothes and put hers back on, and I had to sit on my hands so I didn’t grab her and pull her back into bed.

“Do you ever wear underwear?” I asked, as she covered her perfect ass with dark denim.

She gave me a wink. “Sometimes. But never with these jeans. And never with certain kinds of pants.”

This was information that I would ponder later, for many hours.

“Anything else you want to know?” She asked, looking at me as I lay in bed watching her.

“I think I’d like to know pretty much everything about you, Esme,” I said. Potato curled into the warm blankets that Esme had vacated. He might be thrilled to see her gone from my bed, but I wasn’t.

She walked over to my side of the bed and leaned down to give me a kiss. I had morning breath, but she didn’t seem to notice or care.

“It would take me a really long time to tell you everything,” she said.

“I’ve got time,” I replied, as she moved toward the door.

We’d spent nearly twenty-four hours together and all I could think about was when I was going to see her again.

“Maybe I’ll come by the bar tonight and you can tell me a few,” I said.

She leaned in the doorway. “Am I the only one who’s required to spill their guts, or is this going to be a fair trade?”

“I’ll show you mine if you show me yours,” I said, and she made a little groaning noise.

“We did that last night and I’ll be thinking about it for the rest of the day.”

“Me too.”

She gave me one last look. “Bye, Paige.”

“See you later.”
