“It happened. She came over last night and she left this morning.” I shrugged one shoulder.

“Wait, I’m confused. Isn’t that exactly what you wanted to happen? That was the whole plan.”

I sighed and closed my eyes. I needed more coffee.

“Yes, but that was before it happened. Now everything is…” I waved my hands in the air.

“Ohhhhh. Seems like things didn’t turn out the way you thought.”

I closed my laptop. No more work was getting done today.

“No, it didn’t, and now I have no idea what to do.”

Em stood up.

“Come on. Let me buy you a latte and then we can figure this out.”

Two hourslater I was at home with not only Em, but she’d called in Linley to assist.

“You really didn’t need to do this,” I said, when Linley showed up with broccoli cheese soup, bread bowls, and a jug of strawberry lemonade.

“I know, but what are friends for?”

It had been ages since the three of us had hung out.

“I told her I was going to see her tonight,” I said, as Linley set up the food for us.

“Well, you’re going to have to message her and say that something came up, because you need to figure out what you’re going to do before you see her again,” Em said, handing out spoons.

I looked at my phone and opened a new message to send to Esme.

Hey, so I probably won’t see you tonight. Someone kept me up late and I’m behind on work. Talk soon?

She sent me a voice memo about ten minutes later.

“No worries, it’s actually packed here tonight with live music and a bachelorette party, so I wouldn’t have had much attention for you anyway. We’ll talk tomorrow.” There was a ton of background noise and I could barely hear her, but the tension in her voice was palpable. I guess it worked out in the end anyway.

“Okay, that’s done,” I said.

We all parked ourselves on the couch with our food and started strategizing.

“Don’t tell her,” Em said. “Put yourself in her place. How would you feel if she said that to you?”

Like shit. I would feel like shit.

“I’ve made such a big mistake,” I said with a groan. “Why didn’t you stop me?”

Linley pointed at herself. “I tried to and you didn’t listen to me! I knew this was going to happen.”

I scoffed. “You didn’t know this was going to happen. You didn’t think I could even get her to come over in the first place.”

No respect for my seduction skills.

“Paige, it was a bad idea, and now you’re in a situation. I hate to say I agree with Em, but I agree with Em. Telling her is only going to hurt her, and wasn’t the whole goal to get back at Wyatt?”

“It was.” Before. Before we’d gone to the beach. Before we’d built a sandcastle together. Before we sat together on the couch and ate pizza. Before we’d rolled around naked in my bed.
