We both laughed and then talked about where we should go and what we should do.

“As long as I don’t have to dance,” she said. “I don’t dance.”

“Wait, you don’t? This is brand new information.”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, I know, but you’re one of the few people who have seen me dance.”

I cringed at the memory.

“Exactly,” she said.

“Your mom really did you a disservice not putting you in dance class when you were a kid.”

“Oh no, she did. I got kicked out.”

That was news to me.

“They kicked you out of dance class? Why?”

Linley grinned. “I may have bit one of the other dancers.”

I put my hand up. “I’m sorry, you bit one of the other kids?”

“To be fair, we were five years old, and she was mean as hell.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that. “Wait, did you bite someone I’d know?”

“Angie Moore.”

The mention of her name made me automatically recoil. “Yeah, you were right to bite her. She’s a bitch.”

I’d had an altercation with her at camp one summer that I still didn’t talk about with anyone, not even my mom.

“Exactly. She had it coming.”

Linley and I talked about our disdain for Angie until Linley started yawning and I knew she had to get to bed. Having a friend that woke up before the sun was weird as hell when I was used to pulling all-nighters to meet deadlines.

“Someday we’ll have jobs with normal hours,” I said. “That’s the dream.”

She yawned again and gave me a limp hug. “Go to bed,” I said, and let myself out of her house. No doubt she’d end up passed out on the couch. Been there, done that.

Potato was grumpy when I got back and screamed at me the whole time I was in the shower. To appease him, and to make him stop, I gave him a few spoonfuls of tuna.

“You are literally the most spoiled cat I’ve ever seen. You’re lucky you got me as your mom.” He just rubbed his face on mine and I tried not to recoil from his tuna breath.

Work was calling, but I knew if I started anything, I wouldn’t be able to stop, and I had to set better boundaries. Or at least start thinking about setting better boundaries. Something something balance.

Instead, I tried to find out if Esme Bell was allergic to cats via her social media posts.
