“Oh, Paige. I love you and I know she’s a nice girl, and I’ll support you in what you want to do, but I’m just going to have some reservations.”

I nodded. “That’s fair. I think you should meet her, though. We’re having dinner with her dad next week.”

“Would you mind if I tagged along? I’ve always liked Butch. He helps me pick out the perfect avocados.” The way that my mom said the last part was weird. As if picking out avocados wasn’t about picking out avocados.

Did my mom have a thing for Esme’s dad? That was too horrifying to contemplate right now.

“Okay,” I said, hoping to change the subject.

Fortunately, Mom started chattering about other things, and I was left to let my mind wander.

I loved Esme. Holy shit.

I loved her and I didn’t know if I should tell her.

* * *

“How did it go?”Esme asked, looking up from her book as I walked in from having dinner with my mom.

“Exhausting,” I said, falling onto the couch next to her. Stormy was asleep on the floor next to the dog bed that Potato was curled up in the center off. Typical.

“But she was okay with everything?”

I closed my eyes and leaned my head back. I needed a massage.

“Yeah, pretty much. She thinks we’re rushing, but what else is new?”

Oh, by the way, I am completely in love with you, just wanted you to know, I thought.

I mean, it wasn’t completely out of left field that I loved her. I’d known I was falling before. But we had literally just had big drama and had made a huge decision to move in together. Was it too much too soon? Would I freak her out?

“What is it?” she asked. I’d been silent, thinking about the fact that I loved her. Oops.

“Nothing,” I said. Nothing except those three words.

“Okay,” she said, but I could tell she was suspicious. “How about a drink?”

“That sounds perfect.”

Esme went to the kitchen and did her mixology magic and came back with a glass of… something. One of her favorite things was making a drink and not telling me what it was and having me do a taste test.

“You’re so lucky I love you,” I said as I prepared to take a sip.

“What?” she asked, and I had to fumble to not drop the glass, splashing a little bit of the reddish liquid on the floor.

“Shit!” I slammed the drink down on the coffee table, causing even more of a mess.

“What did you say?” Esme said, staring at me.

“Nothing, I said nothing!” I yelled. Why was I yelling?

“Did you say you loved me?” she asked.

I panicked, looking for the exits. Esme was between me and the front door. Maybe I could head out the back and throw myself through the screen on the porch.

“Paige,” Esme said, getting my focus back. My heart pounded as if it too was trying to escape.

“What?” I asked.
