Alexis considers whether to take the car with her cousins and Tripp or ride wrapped around me. Her horny smile promises I’m about to get fondled.

We ride to the only decent Tumbling Rock bar besides my clubhouse, The Rock Tavern. Admittedly, I considered heading to an out-of-town dive since I’m bringing along the weirdo Toomey sisters and dingus Tripp. Mostly, I want to avoid my parents showing up and hassling us. But I can’t risk Alexis thinking she’s the problem.

When we arrive at the Skipper’s Tavern parking lot, I take her hand before getting greedy by wanting a kiss. Alexis offers her lips and moans when I suck at her tongue. I can’t think straight when she makes my dick so damned hard.

Up ahead, Zelda marches into the bar. Juno dances around Tripp to the beat of Violent Femmes playing over the parking lot’s speakers. He looks stunned by her interest.

I’m far more capable of handling a horny chick. When Alexis bounces next to me, riled up by the “Kiss Off” song and her arousal, I stroke her smiling lips. Tripp imitates me, inspiring Juno to nearly knock him to the ground as she kisses all over him.

“I don’t get it.”

Completely oblivious to her cousin’s cat scratch fever happening nearby, Alexis asks, “What?

“How could I have ever doubted you were real?”

“You said it was five years ago, right? That’s a long time.”

I narrow my eyes, still not buying that she doesn’t remember me. Like, I own a mirror. I’m fully aware I’m memorable. And she gave me hardcore shit that day. No way she doesn’t remember!

But Alexis only smiles at me and starts walking toward the bar’s front door. We enter the busy honky-tonk to find a birthday party in progress. That explains the music being something besides classic rock or country.

Zelda’s already at the bar top, arguing over how she doesn’t have money, but she wants booze.

“It’s on me, Kallie,” I tell the bartender, who turns soft and willing at the sight of me.

“See?” Zelda says and smacks the bar top. “Gimme.”

Rolling her eyes, Kallie makes a mojito for the Toomey. Alexis asks if the bartender knows how to make a lemon drop cocktail. After another eye roll, Kallie remembers that I tip well. On her best behavior now, my ex-hookup produces the lemon drop and gets me a New York sour.

By the time Tripp and Juno arrive, I’m no longer focused on the drinks or even my red-hot dream girl. Instead, I need to deal with an incoming Tuesday.

My sister shoves her way through the partygoers to where I sit at the bar top. Her tanned face is flushed, and her blue eyes glassy. My sister is beyond plastered.

“Are you here for the party?” I ask when she keeps gasping like she’s simply shocked to see me.

Finally, she uses words to say, “I’m in a bad way.”

“Like preggers?” I whisper and knock her off my lap since she’s nearly wrestling me now. “This isn’t the time to announce such a thing. Save it for Sunday dinner when our ma can use her fainting couch.”

“No, no, not that,” she says and downs my drink. “I need you to talk me down. See, I think Jeremy might be cheating on me. If he is, I’m willing to kill everyone he’s ever met. That includes our family, West. Stop me before I go homicidal.”

“First off, don’t kill our family. That’ll just complicate your living situation since our parents pay for your shit.”

“Fair point,” she says and pats my face. “This is why I came to you. You’re very wise like that fricking stupid-ass owl always licking a fricking lollipop.”

“I want you to stop drinking booze until you can keep to one ‘fricking’ per sentence.”

“I’m so very heartbroken.”

“Over a rumor?”

“No, I have suspicions,” she says, gripping my shirt and glancing around conspiratorially. “People are hiding pertinent information from me.”

“I haven’t heard anything. I’m around town and talk to many people. Your paranoia is likely inspired by boredom. You’re looking for a reason to bail on Jeremy that doesn’t make you the bad guy.”

“I’m always the bad guy,” she mumbles, pouting now. “Even when Edith is the evil perpetrator, I get the blame. Stupid bitch with her extra dark brows. I ought to kick her ass again.”

“Just cool your jets right now.”
