He chuckled, staring at the vegetable in disbelief. It looked very much like cucumbers in Nerifir—green, long, and probably juicy.

He brought it to his nose and inhaled the fresh, crisp scent. It always reminded him of the cool water running between the roots of his father’s palace.

Water…

Closing his eyes, he sank his teeth into the dark green skin. The clear, watery juice ran from under his fangs, dripping on his bottom lip and trickling down his chin.

So much like water.

He inhaled the fresh scent again, biting a huge chunk off from the side. The tender flesh of the vegetable slid down his parched throat, soothing it with moisture. He took another bite, then another.

Before long, the entire cucumber was gone. And he wanted more.

His insides, which had hardly seen any food or water since the day he was taken, appeared to instantly absorb every bit of moisture and nutrition from the vegetable. His stomach still felt empty. His skin remained dry like paper, but some clarity returned to his brain. He felt better than he had in a very long time.

Exhaling slowly, he leaned against a side of the crate.

Maybe he should’ve been more cautious when ingesting anything that came from Ghata and her people. Chances were the woman worked for her. It could all be a trick after all—a trap.

He couldn’t bring himself to care, though. For the first time in a long time, there was food in his belly. The scorching dryness receded.

He closed his eyes, not in a fog of delirium for once, but in a deep, restful sleep.
