Oh, hell no. “I’m a nurse. I’m okay.”

His touch leaves me, and I take the chance to open my eyes. Sure enough, he’s sneaking out of the kitchen.

“Stop right there.” The bite on my demand is harsh. I’m in nurse mode.

“Are you sure? I mean, you knocked it just not bad, but it was fucking hard.”

Yeah, he’s not fucking wrong about that. “Just give me a second. I know what I’m looking for.”

The scrape of the chair against the floor lets me know he’s close. It’s only a second and his aroma invades me.

“Did you take a shower?”

He lets out a small chortle. “That’s an odd question. Maybe you do have a concussion.”

Why do these two very different men light my insides on fire? I’ve not felt this way, not ever. Even with the man I said I do to.

“I guess it is. It’s just that you smell mighty good.”

Look at me. I was with the same guy my entire life and now that I have some freedom, I’m whoring myself out.

“Thanks for the compliment. I wish I could tell you it’s some expensive aftershave, but alas, I’m a teacher, and it’s simply soap.”

I want to bathe in the same soap he has, oh, and with him, too.

“So, since I smell good, and you’re sort of stuck with me for a couple minutes, is it inappropriate to plan our date?”

I’m silent. Is it appropriate? Should I answer him?

“Ah, shit. It’s very rude of me. I’m—”

An Irish accent fills the room around us. “Nah, go ahead and plan. I’m not a jealous man.”

Stone grows quiet, and my eyes are still closed. “Charis, love, what did you do to yourself?”

His touch is so abrupt, honest, and direct, like Stone is. “Did you hurt yourself, love?”

I can’t answer him, because Gibson is doing it for me. “She banged the fuck out of her head.”

“So, you know the questions I’m about to ask you.” Stone starts without an explanation as to what happened to me. It’s quite obvious.

I interrupt him because I do. “I’ve not lost consciousness. It was a little blurry, and I’ve not opened my eyes.”

A light touch encounters the bruise, or what I imagine is a bruise. “Shit, that hurts.” I wince, even though I’m aware his fingers barely brush it.

“Yeah, you hit it hard. Just sit here, and I’ll let Bridget know we’re leaving. I’ll give it a little look once I’m back at your house.”

There’s almost a growl that leaves Gibson’s voice. “And don’t worry, Teach, I promise that’s not a come on. I’ll take a look before I leave for the night—just to be clear.”

“Look at you, Doc, you’re an outstanding guy, aren’t you?” This is the cute teacher next to me.

I don’t miss the bite in Gibson’s voice. I could chalk it up to jealousy. But I have an instinct, and nothing to back it up. But I’d venture to guess there’s more between them.

“Ah, Teach, look at you. Don’t worry, I’ll be a real gentleman to this beauty we both seem to have a shared interest in.”

There it is, the bluntness of Stone.

His touch is back on me. “Stay put, love. I’ll be right back.”
