A note sits on the counter, next to the coffee pot that’s still on.

Gibs,

We’re out today, catching a movie Brandon and Jett have wanted to see. The house is pretty much yours. The coffee is fresh. Help yourself to it, my friend.

I’m appreciative of her telling me the house is going to be quiet for the day. It’s a nice bonus. I could sit under one of the umbrellas that are still up in the backyard from last week with a book. I should work on some lesson plans for future instructions I have planned. With this being the first year I’ve taught kindergarten, my planning time has gone from an hour a day once to twice a week.

And, I realized years ago, my planning period was not really a time for planning, but for returning phone calls and faculty meetings and a million other things I really thought would be forty minutes of uninterrupted time.

I climb the steps to my room, just to come back down with three different resource books and my planner in my hands. I will soak up what’s left of the summer until winter is upon us.

The doorbell rings, and I’m expecting it to be an Amazon package. This family one clicks more than anyone I’ve ever met. Pulling back the door, to what I assume will be several boxes, is the cocky expression of Stone.

“If you won’t come to me, I will come to you.” He has a pizza in his hands and doesn’t wait for an invitation.

I’m stunned. I don’t have a chance to stop him. “Um…” I’m muttering behind him. “Stone, this isn’t my house. You can’t just barge in here.”

He sets the pizza on the island of the kitchen. I have to admit our lunch smells amazing, but then again, I’ve just realized I’ve not had anything substantial in my stomach since well before dinner the day before when I pouted in my room like a four-year-old after hearing Simon and Bridget discuss Stone’s plan with Charis. My Charis.

“But you forget who my best mate is. And I knew they’d be gone for the day. So, in fact, I do know you’re home by yourself.”

The way his smile brightens with his delivery has me both seething for the man who is an ass, but it does something equally or if not more to me. There’s something to be said for persistence. I’m desired. My presence is required by him. And I like it, to the point I don’t kick him out of the house.

Though, will I give this smug bastard the satisfaction of knowing this? My hands move to my hips. Yeah, I have that pissed off look down very well. “You’re lucky I’m starved, or you’d be on your way with your smug asshole ways.”

“So, my arsehole ways can stay and spend the day with you?” There’s something about his innocence, I’ve seen it in his miniature version of himself. Yeah, Jett is so much like his dad, it makes my head spin.

“Depends?”

My resource books are still in my hands.

“On what, Teach?”

I reach for a piece of pizza straight from the box and blow on the piping hot pie. “Depends on if you mind watching me work for a little bit. These kids won’t teach themselves.”

“Do you have glasses to wear?” I pinch my brows together because it’s an odd question.

“Yeah, I wear readers, why?”

His lips quirk up into a huge grin. “Oh, Teach, watching you in your sexy glasses isn’t a fucking hardship. But you’ll have to promise me something.”

“Oh, Lord, I can’t wait to hear this.” I take a bite of my pizza now that it’s cooler.

“You can’t work all afternoon. All work and no play isn’t healthy for you, believe me.”

I’d tease him, telling him he probably plays too hard, if not for the fact I know he works equally hard.

“Yeah, I can agree to your terms.”

He pulls for his own slice of pizza, standing across from me. “Okay, then, Teach, it’s settled. We have a deal.”
