His hand covers mine. “I get it and have mad respect for you realizing this finally. You’re putting Jett first, and it’s all that matters, right?”

This has been deep, too deep and for now I choose to sidestep how deep we just went with one another. Though, I understand this has been something that has brought us closer, as I want.

“Okay, how about I go feed your growing body for now, Dr. Phil?” I jest.

“Always have to show your assholeness to me, don’t you?” he retorts, a large grin taking over his face.

“My arseholeness is the most endearing part of me.”

And with that, he slips on his shoes and we’re out the door, but not before he pulls at my hand, interlacing our fingers together.

We’re backat the little pub from a couple weeks ago, which I coined our first official date. “Can’t stay away from the wings, can you?” The familiar voice is Bridget and I swing around to both her and Charis, beers in their hands.

Gibson had snuck off to the bathroom as we entered the pub. And neither one of them has seen the two of us together.

“Wait, Bridget, I thought you were on a family day, and I assume Simon still has Jett.”

A smile pulls at her lips. “Yeah, a family day that has caused me to drink. Simon volunteered nighttime routines, and of course he has Jett. He was the only kid in our care that was actually behaved.”

“Now”—I let out a chortle—“you can’t be talking about my child.”

“No, he’s an angel. And is apparently watching the Antique Road Show according to what my husband has texted me. Simon dropped me off at Charis’s house. And thank goodness, this mother needs a break, too.”

I’ve yet to say hi to Charis, but her eyes swing around me. She must catch a glimpse of Gibson. Yep, it’s who she’s looking at. With a turn of my head, he’s just as surprised to see her as she is him.

“All week, I’ve assumed you two hated each other and today, you’re what?” Her question doesn’t come out cute, or even inquisitive. If I were to gauge this woman’s angst, and honestly it’s not hard, I’d say she’s pissed as fuck.

“Well, you see…” Fuck, I have nothing. Honesty is the best policy but telling Charis that Gibson and I have slept together in the past isn’t fully my confession to make.

“Hey, ladies,” Gibson greets, standing near me, but certainly not showing the closeness we’d shared most of the afternoon, with our hands and knees touching as often as we could get.

“Yeah, want to share what the hell is going on? You’ve treated Stone as if he was the worst thing on planet earth. I sensed a little bit of tension but socked it up to jealousy of him being with me. But there’s more… A fuck ton more, by the looks of it.”

He doesn’t say a word, nothing, not a thing! And though I should confer with him, at least he’s here.

Bridget’s gaze goes from myself, to Gibson, and back to me. She’s dumbfounded. Maybe Simon hasn’t told her about my sexuality. He’d always claimed it was my story to tell.

“Yeah, well, Care, remember when I told you I, too, was seeing someone. Um, this is that someone.”

Charis takes one last look at us, turning on her heels. Her reaction has been more than shock. Her eyes had been glazed over, and as she saw jealousy in Gibson’s eyes yesterday, it’s what I see in her eyes today.

“Oh, someone is in trouble.” These are Bridget’s parting words. And she’s not wrong.
