“Fair enough. I get it. I really do.” His hand reaches out to me, but before his touch connects with my own, he pulls back. “Is tomorrow too soon again? I mean, it can be something as easy as takeout after you get your little one to sleep.”
He gets it. The struggles or at least he’s faking really good. “I have a day planned with Meadow tomorrow. Want to pick me up from work on Monday?”
He begins to break out in hysterics. “Sure, seven thirty then?”
“Yeah, sounds perfect.” I stand, and when I reach for the door, I stop. Do I have more I want to say or ask? I sidestep to see him, the almost baby face of this man with his youthful expression. It’s full of hope. “Hey, Gibs,” I begin, as Bridget calls him.
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for coming over and sharing this with me. You didn’t have to, and Lord knows how you thought I’d react, but it’s gone a long way to making me understand this dynamic a bit better.”
“Anytime, Charis. Something tells me you’re worth it.”
And once again, a man puts me first. It’s not something I’m used to, not with Jimmy and in twenty-four hours, two different men have done this for me. It makes me think that maybe I have a chance at a happily ever after. But with who, that’s still the big ten-million-dollar question.
