“Yeah, I’d love to spend some time with her, if that’s okay?” Especially since we’re building to something.

The pie is gone, and both Charis and Stone have eaten the same amount. “You guys really were hungry.” They got called in early and will be working until seven tomorrow morning. So, no wonder they are storing it away.

“Did you hear back from Lance?” Stone asks, popping the last piece of his pizza in his mouth.

“Yeah, he loved it. Wants to really get more. I’ll work on it a little at night. He’d like it in three weeks. He’s going to reach out to agents since he’s a publisher since I need some representation. But his publishing house may very well be interested in picking it up. They’re always looking for young adult fantasy.”

“Fuck, Teach, that’s awesome.”

Charis’s ringer begins to ding. “Let me grab Meadow, I’ll be back. Ma wants to get on the road.”

She leaves, and the two of us begin to chat about what my movie will be like when my book gets picked up. This is Stone, whose dreams may be a little more than my own. But it makes me grin at his dream for me.

“Mama, when do I go to Bridget’s?” GG walks into the room with her hands interlaced with Meadow’s.

I can never get over how well this three-year-old speaks. “Hey, I know you.” She runs over to us and hugs me only after giving Stone one, too. “You at farm play house, right?”

“Yeah, sweetheart. I’m Gibson.”

“I’s remembers.”

She looks just like her mama. It’s so hard to look away from her. It won’t take me long to give my heart over to this little girl, simply because I love her mother.

I’m about to say something to her when both their texts start to ding. “Ah, love, we’re needed. Balls!”

“Wait,” she starts, looking at her messages. “Bridget is here. Gibs, can you take her outside when you leave? The girls are asleep in the car.”

I turn to Meadow. “Is it okay if you can protect me on the way to the parking lot, Miss Meadow?” I ask.

“Yeahs, I’s braves,” she retorts, and Charis gives her a large kiss on the forehead.

“Be good, baby. And don’t forget to put on your coat, it’s cold outside.” The mom in Charis hands me the bright pink coat and I help Meadow into it, and Charis follows Stone out of the room.

“You ready, little lady?”

“Readies, big man.” She begins to laugh at her joke.

“That’s funny.” She holds on to my hand, and we cross the entrance of the hospital, and I spy Bridget’s car on the other side of the road leading to the parking lot.

“Look, Meadow. I see Bridget over there.” She flicks her lights at me, and I lean down to chat with her on the short walk as we start toward the crosswalk. “Do you know what? I live at Bridget’s house, too.”

“Really. I sees you tonight.” I look both ways and cross the street.

“Yeah, baby.. I’ll see you when I get back to Bridget’s house.” My attention is on her.

Bridget calls out for us, and I shift my attention toward her van, only to be blinded by headlights racing toward us.
