There’s a deafening silence, and it feels like I can even hear the single happy tear rolling down my cheek before Condor blurts it out.

Saying what the whole room’s thinking.

“Say yes, will ya? Don’t leave a man that size resting on his knee. Tell him yes, and let’s have something to god damned eat already!”

I somehow manage to find my voice, my heart exploding in my chest as I tell Xander the only thing that’ll ever matter the most to us.

“Of course, I’ll be your wife…I love you, Xander. I never even knew what love could mean until I saw you…Yes. Yes, Yes!” I squeak, and the whole dining room erupts with applause.

I even notice my mom and dad crying, hugging each other in congratulations for raising a daughter.

And maybe just a few tears of relief too.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Xander

In all the excitement of the moment, I forget I don’t even have a ring to put on my woman’s finger.

Sure I’ve claimed her already, and in the only way I know that’s forever, but making it official means a lot more to me and I know it’ll mean the world to Chloe too.

Not to mention her still can’t believe this is actually happening parents!

Daphne quietly removes herself, and it’s probably for the best not to have her bad mood hanging over our special day.

And Condor. I mean, dad even has a few little surprises of his own left.

It’s like he’s trying to make up for more than just lost time at the last minute.

Trying to right all the wrongs while he still has a chance.

And to be honest? I’m glad he is.

We could do very well without it all, Chloe and me. But it means more than money or security to hear him say certain things, do certain things.

And my lack of an engagement ring on the fly is noticeable, but something tells me even he thought of every possibility from today’s luncheon meeting.

“Here, Xander,” he says gruffly, motioning me over to him while Chloe’s parents and most of the other diners gush over her good news.

Congratulating her and commenting on just how fortunate she really is. Literally.

I open the frayed little velvet box, gasping a little when I see the size of the stone.

It must be worth more than this whole country club. And old too.

“It’s… It’s too much,” I murmur. “I can look after Chloe. I don’t need you to…,” I try to explain politely.

But he’s having none of that.

“It belonged to kings and queens, caused and ended wars. I want you to have it. I want Chloe to wear it with pride, knowing that she’s not only found the man of her dreams…but a family too. A very old and very special family. One that’s welcomed her and done a better job than I’ve done so far,” he says, his voice cracking with emotion.

Never taking no for an answer, I know better than to press the point, and I can only do the right thing by Chloe and my new-old dad.

Making our engagement officially official, I slip the massive jewel onto Chloe’s finger and ask her again if she’s sure she’ll be my wife.

“I’ll be more than that,” she whispers in my ear as I lean down to kiss her for the millionth time, which is never enough.

“I’ll be whatever you want me to be when you’ve got this inside me,” she growls, squeezing my dick through my pants.

Not even worried if anyone sees, but I know they couldn’t. My huge body’s blocking hers, giving us a few moments of privacy.

Making me wish I could whisk her straight off to bed right now.

But being in this kind of country club, with my dad as master of ceremonies for an impromptu engagement party?

I think we’re gonna have a long day and even longer night ahead of us.

Chloe’s parents both surprise me by offering their congratulations.

Real ones, too, not just sucking up because they smell money.

Well. Maybe just a little, but that’s okay. They were always gonna be well looked after anyway.

Anything to do with Chloe is a part of me now, and likewise for her.

Any friend of hers is a friend of mine. Any family she has is a part of ours now.

Shaking her dad’s hand for what feels like the tenth time, too, I notice him swaying a little. He’s pale.

“Do you think we could get something to eat now?” he croaks, and I have to agree that that’s the second-best question I’ve heard all day.

The first was asking the most amazing girl in the world to live the rest of her life like we’ve lived the past day.

We're together, madly in love, and ready to handle anything because we’ve got what matters most.

Family. And that’s us, for starters. Me and her. But it’s also all the moms and dads, even the horrible half-sisters.
