“How did no one know you were dating someone?” Mom asked. “And where did you meet him? Is he attractive?”

“Doesn’t matter.” I slid my feet into my sneakers.

“Those were some pretty expensive roses,” Mom said, taking a box from Sebastian. “Does he have money?”

“We’re not talking about this,” I said, going out the front door and heading for the stairs.

I didn’t know for sure how Nash had gotten my new address, but I was going to have to have a chat with Mo when she got back to town.

It was late when everyone left, close to nine o’clock. But I was moved in. My clothes were put away, Mom and Sophia had unpacked and organized the kitchen, I’d put toiletries and miscellaneous items in the bathroom, and the guys made sure all my appliances and electronics were working. Basic cable was included with the rent, so they’d hooked everything up, and the cable guy was coming on Tuesday with a box so I could upgrade to get more channels. Dee and I had put fresh linens on my bed and now she was putting away a box of books.

“Dee, it’s late,” I called to her. “Come relax.”

“I know you’re going to be working crazy hours starting Monday,” she said. “Which means the boxes that are left unpacked will sit here until your next vacation.”

I chuckled. “Maybe, but you’ve done more than enough. Let’s crack open that bottle of wine you brought over.”

“Oooh. Wine.” Her blue eyes sparkled with mischief. “I like wine. Do you know where your mom put your corkscrew?”

“I threw it out,” I told her. “Instead, I kept Theo’s fancy automatic wine opener. It’s in the cabinet to the left of the fridge.”

Dee opened the bottle of Riesling she’d brought over while I got two wine glasses down. My mom and sisters were nosy as hell, but they’d done a great job in the kitchen.

“So.” Dee sank down on the couch, wine glass in hand. “Are you going to tell me about Nash?”

I sighed. “It’s a long story and I’m tired.”

“Then tell me what happened with Rob.”

I leaned back against the cushions. “Rob and Nash are the same person.”

The play of emotions on Dee’s face would have been comical had it not been so heartbreaking. She went from confusion to horror to fury.

“Are you fucking kidding me? Nash Reilly was catfishing you by pretending to be someone else?”

“To be fair,” I said quickly. “I’m the one who dialed his number by mistake. So it’s not like he sought me out. It was a coincidence that the guy I dialed by mistake turned out to be one of the Mavericks. And he didn’t know right away either. It wasn’t until I started working there that he put two and two together.”

“And he didn’t tell you?”

“Nope.”

“But it’s not like you guys were involved, so why would he keep it a secret?”

“We slept together,” I said, taking a big gulp of wine.

“You slept with Nash Reilly?” Her eyes were so wide I was afraid she was going to hurt herself. “Seriously? And you didn’t tell me?”

“It just happened the other day and then…” I downed the rest of my wine. “Then shit hit the fan.”

“I’m confused. I think you need to start at the beginning.”

“I better get the bottle,” I said, getting up.

“And some cheese and crackers,” she said, getting up and following me. “I worked hard today. And that Chinese food we ordered didn’t fill me up.”

We finished the Riesling and opened a bottle of prosecco next. We were both pretty tipsy by the time I’d filled her in on what had been going on the last month or so and she giggled.

“I want to be mad you kept all this from me, but I’m still trying to process the fact that you slept with Nash Reilly. I mean, shitty personality aside, he’s fucking beautiful. Please don’t tell me he’s selfish in bed.”

I groaned. “No. Not even a little. Best sex of my life.”

“Why are the best lovers the biggest jerks?” she asked sadly. “Damn, I hate this for you. But I also hate this Eric guy. I mean, what a dick move to tell you. I bet he never gets invited to another team BBQ. Wonder what Nash did to make him want to get revenge like this.”

“What do you mean?” I asked in confusion.

“What do you mean what do I mean?” She cocked her head. “You don’t think Eric did this out of the kindness of his heart, do you? He wouldn’t betray his teammate unless he either has a thing for you or Nash pissed him off and he wanted to get him back.”

I stared at her. “I hadn’t even considered that. I was so pissed at Nash, I just thought he was being a nice guy. Shit. And he’s married, so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have a thing for me. I don’t think we’ve said ten words to each other since I started working there.”
