It’s disgusting.

Love,

Luna

Chapter Nine

Wolfe

“Walls are up, and we’re ready to start the roof,” John says as Luna and I join him in the driveway. The walls of the new building tower over the existing house.

The garage is going to be fucking huge.

I can’t wait.

“Good timing. It’s supposed to rain next week.”

“That’s my thought exactly,” John agrees. “But we have a problem.”

I raise a brow and sip my coffee. “And that is?”

“They made the roof trusses already. We just have to crane them in. However, this space to the left of the house isn’t wide enough to get back to where we need to be.” John points to the left of the carport attached to the house. “We either need to take down some trees or the carport.”

“Carport,” I immediately reply. “No contest. I don’t want to lose the trees.”

“That’s what I would do, as well,” John says with a nod. “Especially since there’s nothing in the carport, and you plan to demolish the house next year anyway.”

“Exactly.” I narrow my eyes as I let my gaze skim the house. “You don’t think taking the carport down will cause a domino effect and make the rest fall, too, do you?”

“It shouldn’t,” he says. “It’s a lean-to, not a load-bearing structure. It should come right down without an issue. In fact, I have the backhoe ready now. You’re welcome to watch while I take it down.”

“Let’s do it,” I confirm.

John hurries away and climbs into the backhoe himself, starting the engine.

“What are we watching?” June asks as she joins Luna and me in the driveway.

“He’s going to take down the carport,” Luna tells her. “What are you up to?”

“I was on my way to your place to get started on my workday and saw the two of you out here. Thought I’d stop to see what you’re looking at.”

June bites her lip and narrows her eyes, and I turn to watch John raise the bucket on the backhoe and then bring it down on the flimsy roof of the carport.

It crumbles without an issue.

And then, right there before my very eyes, the entire exterior wall of the house comes down with it.

“Thought that might happen,” June says cheerfully. “But no one asked for my opinion. Gotta go.”

She waves and saunters back to her truck, headed up to the lighthouse as I stare in disbelief.

“Oops,” Luna says. “Is that the kitchen sink?”

“Yep,” I confirm and sip my coffee. I’m not even mad.

“Shit. I’m sorry, Wolfe,” John says as he hurries over, his face grim. “That shouldn’t have happened.”

“Well, it’s not the best timing, but as you said, it was going to come down anyway. I was just hoping it could wait until next year.”

“It’s not habitable,” John says and props his hands on his hips.

“Looks like you’re staying with me,” Luna says brightly and squeezes my hand. “We can go in and gather your clothes and things.”

I frown down at her, and John clears his throat.

“Uh, I’ll let you two sort this out,” he says and walks away.

“I can get a rental,” I say immediately, but Luna shakes her head.

“Why?” She looks back at the house again. “You’ll want to be close by while your garage is built. I’m a hundred yards up the road. Also, you’ve spent the past three nights in my bed. You only come down here for clothes.”

“I don’t want to assume—”

“I offered.” She smiles up at me. “Don’t overthink it, Wolfe. That’s my job.”

I laugh and kiss her forehead. It’s true, I’ve quickly become addicted to being with Luna, and now that we have a physical relationship, I have no interest in being anywhere but with her at night.

“Okay, but if you get sick of me, you can throw me out anytime.”

“So noted.” She laughs and finishes her coffee, tossing it into the nearby trash. “I think I have to go soothe June’s rumpled feathers.”

“She didn’t seem mad. She laughed.”

“That was sarcasm—the kind with annoyance under it.” She shrugs a shoulder. “She’s still sore about the garage, which is silly because she doesn’t have time for it. It’s pride, I think.”

“I’m pretty sure if she doesn’t want to sleep ever again, she could work here a few hours a week.”

“I’m positive that she doesn’t want that. She’s just stubborn.” Luna boosts up onto her toes and plants a kiss right on me, in front of the crew and everyone.

I wrap my arms around her and give it right back.

“I have to drive up the coast a bit to look at some lighting choices today,” I inform her. “Ride with me?”

“Sure, sounds like fun. And maybe I’ll take a look around for some lighting for the B&B while I’m there.”

“Two birds, one stone. I’ll pick you up in about an hour.”

“Perfect. Do you want me to help you gather your stuff before I go talk to June?”
