She laughed. “Insecure about being a third—or fourth—wheel, with you, Ragnar, and Red.”

“There’s no need. You possess a talent Ragnar and I are lacking, and your ‘hearing’ is even superior to Red’s.” He hesitated. “You saved Dierdre. I might not have stopped where you insisted we stop. I might have backtracked. And it might have been too late.”

“Thanks,” she said quietly.

At her building, he left her off on the street. “Eight a.m. tomorrow?”

“I’ll be outside. Ready.”

“And talk to Megan.”

“Of course. I’ll get right back to you.”

She was true to her word. Mark’s phone rang before he reached the Krewe offices.

“Hey, Megan doesn’t have anything until tomorrow evening. She’s thrilled to meet with Brant Pickering. And she understood immediately he was a suspect; she’s happy to prove we’re wrong about him.”

“He’s just a person of interest.”

“I said that. She said ‘suspect.’”

He smiled. Megan Law sounded like Colleen’s sister, all right.

“Great. I’ll set up a time with Pickering—”

“Okay. Megan will be downstairs with me at eight.”

“The meeting may be later—”

“We might as well have her with us for whenever. And she loves dogs. She’ll be fine.”

Mark decided to let it go. He wasn’t sure if he wanted a civilian with them more than was necessary. But maybe it would work out.

He wanted to get back to see Carver again.

And he wanted to go in and search Carver’s house.

A search warrant had been issued.

Forensic crews had been in.

But he knew there was something there...

He just didn’t know what.

“Okay. Eight a.m.,” he said.

“We’ll be there.”
