Please say she’s okay.

“I’m glad to hear that,” Simon responds. “Whoever she is, I hope she’s worthy of you, Eli. You deserve to be happy for once.”

Comforted by his words, I answer, “Thank you.”

“Okay, first of all, get yourself to the hotel and let me know once you’re checked in. We can meet there and discuss the next steps.”

“Okay, sounds good.”

It all does sound good. Relief courses through me at the knowledge I’m going to be free of this marriage I’ve been trapped in for the last three years, but at the same time, I can’t help worrying over Audrey.

“Damn you, Trent, where are you?!” I whisper-hiss.

“Everything okay, sir?” Craig asks from the front.

I smile. “Everything’s fine, Craig. Just thinking out loud.”

With a sympathetic smile, Craig fixes his eyes back on the road. It’s then I finally receive a text message from Trent.

She’s awake!!!:) :) :) it simply reads, causing me to sigh with relief. I’m guessing from the happy emojis that Audrey is fine. I’m about to dial his number when I receive a phone call from my mother.

“Hi, Mom, how’s it going?”

For a moment, I’m paranoid, wondering if Kendra’s already called her to tell her the news about my wanting a divorce. However, that thought changes the moment I’m met with a deathly silence on the phone.

“Eli,” she eventually whispers back in a desperate voice that makes my stomach drop. “It’s your father. He’s passed away.”
