Victoria rolls her eyes at me like she can’t believe I seriously don’t know already. “Eli Prescott, of course. Who do you think? He’s already picking out wedding outfits for when you and Eli get married.”

My laughter bubbles out of my chest, something that makes me feel good for the first time in a long time. “Seriously?” My eyes land on Trent, but he’s not even looking in my direction.

“Here,” Victoria continues, placing her drink down before lighting up her phone and kneeling next to me. “I thought I could shop, but Trent takes the biscuit.”

I watch as she opens her phone, showing me photo after photo of Trent in different outfits ranging from colorfully outrageous to a simple, black three-piece suit.

“Wow, you look great in a suit, Trent. Very sexy.”

Trent simply crosses his legs, pouting his lips as he holds his glass in the air. “You mock me, girl, but it will happen. I personally think I rock the red glittery jumpsuit.”

Immediately, I point to Victoria’s phone. “Oh, show me that one!”

A giggle erupts in the room as Victoria searches through her phone. “Ah, here it is.” She shows me the photo of Trent doing a model pose in a jumpsuit that would make any woman jealous.

“You’re right,” I reply, smiling up at Trent. “You really do rock that outfit. You must wear that at our wedding.” I then wriggle my eyebrows at him.

He points to me with his drink. “You mock me, young lady, but it will happen. And when it does, I will hold you to it.”

I laugh out loud before responding. “Have you bought it yet?” I think Trent’s going to answer no, but when his eyes dart around the room, I gasp. “Oh, my God, you’ve really bought it, haven’t you?”

“Yep,” Victoria answers for him. “Cost him over five hundred bucks too.”

Everyone, including me, gasps as Trent sits glancing around us with an indignant look on his face.

“Mock me all you like, but I will be wearing it one day. And considering my boss looks after me so well, I’m able to afford it.”

Despite the jokes, his sentiment warms my heart, my appreciative smile towards him not going unnoticed.

“I can’t wait to pick out momma’s outfit.” Trent ends our little moment by concentrating on my mom. “I think you would look stunning in peach.”

My mom leans forward, smiling towards him. “Well, when that day comes, I will be honored for you to go shopping with me.”

“Mom!” I complain, another giggle erupting. “Not you too!” I can’t believe Trent has managed to convince everyone that me and Eli—of all people—are getting married. In an imaginary, fairytale world, yes, but this is my reality.

“I think Eli Prescott would make a fine son-in-law.”

Grumbling, I bury my head in my hands. “I don’t believe this. Not you too. Is there anyone sane left? Victoria? Jason?” My eyes scan both of them, waiting for their answers.

Victoria’s eyes dart guiltily around the room before she speaks. “I kind of bought an outfit too that day.”

I groan out load, unable to comprehend how I woke up to this crazy-town. When my accusing eyes dart to Jason, he simply places his hands out in surrender.

“Don’t look at me, I’m with you on this one.” He then puts his finger to the side of his head, swirling it around like they’ve all gone crazy. At least someone in this room seems rational.

Victoria retorts by nudging her elbow into his arm. “Hey, stop being a male part that dangles between your legs!”

Laugher spits out of me as Trent almost chokes on his mojito. “Oh, girl, you kill me at times.”

More laughter surrounds the room and for a while, I’m deliriously happy. For a while, I forget about the demons that surround my head. Forget about the loss I feel without knowing the reason why. I simply sit, laugh, and drink my virgin mojitos well after the skies have turned dark, and everyone eventually leaves.

In the darkened room of my apartment, I sit, I wait. I stare out of the window.
