Finally, the bottom of the boat scraped against rocks. Alex climbed out quickly and I followed, leaving the kayaks behind.

“Run,” I growled, and he did.

Alex sprinted towards the truck as I turned to try and see just what was happening. Another scream echoed through the forest, followed by the pulse of dark power.

Witches.

I knew it by the smell of sulfur in the air. Were they attacking humans?

Witches rarely attacked humans. That would be extremely unlikely, unless…

I pulled my gaze from searching the forest and ran to the truck, climbing in the drivers side. I cranked it on, immediately backing up just as a hooded figure emerged from the trees.

“Don’t like that,” I grunted.

“Who are they?” Alex gasped.

“Don’t care, not friends,” I said quickly.

I turned the truck and stepped on the gas, lurching over the rocks until we hit the dirt road that would lead us to the highway.

My eyes widened as I realized there was a body in our path, very much dead.

“What in the seven fucking hells,” I whispered. “Alex, call the Barista. Now. And don’t look at the road. Don’t look at anything but the phone. Do you understand?”

He was silent for a moment and then I snarled, stealing a glance at him.

“Yes, Daddy,” he whispered.

“Get him on the phone and let me talk.”

Alex gave a nod and I turned my focus back on the road, my gut twisting.

I had to get Alex far far away from the trouble that had somehow found us.
