The silence gave me enough of an edge to keep going.

“You think the Barista will let you live?”

“Our lives don’t matter. We simply exist to bring Lucifer back.”

“Did he ask you to do this?” I asked, looking at the one who spoke. “Did he say ‘hey random witches— please abduct the human who’s living out their wildest sex dreams and kill him so I can come back?’”

“I’m going to rip out your tongue, I think,” one of them snapped.

“It’s not like I’m here to make friends with you,” I muttered, wincing as more pain began to surface.

“He’s stalling,” one of them snarled. “Just fucking kill him so we can bring our savior back.”

The three of them nodded and I swallowed hard. One of them raised their hands and I rolled out of the way just as a bolt of magic shot from their fingertips.

Fuck. More pain burst through me and I gasped, rolling onto my hands and knees. Dirt caked to the blood that smeared my skin, everything burning and aching.

The foot of a boot collided with my stomach and I cried out, rolling over onto my back.

I couldn’t run. I couldn’t escape.

Fuck, it wasn’t fair to die this way. This had been the best day of my life. Jasper and I loved each other. We were going to build a life together. We were going to be mated and live happily ever after until the end of time.

All of those things were crumbling at my fingertips, going up in smoke right before my eyes.

I stared up at the black clouds in the sky, tears rolling down my face as I felt the first slice of pain. The heat of my blood spilling from the wound consumed me, the pain bringing out another cry.

“Blood onto earth, may you rise…”

The wind picked up, a sharp howl whipping through the towering trees.

“From the depths of hell, we hear your cries…”

Through my blurred vision, I fought the urge to scream as a massive winged figure flew into view, diving straight for me from the sky.

“We offer you life, to escape from death…”

This was it. This was death. Dark gray wings, a perfect form. An angel of death, come to take me.

“Claim this human’s last breath…”
