Vasavi let out a low whistle at the mention of the guy’s name. “The Simha heartthrob.”

Those words set off something in her mind. She recollected other such references.

Reckless Simhas.

Cool Simhas.

Sick Simha parties.

I am the Simha experience.

It hit her that they meant the Simha family members and not all the students at the university. Who knew? If only she knew, she would have known he was a Simha and maybe been more careful? It sucked all the way.

Nami suppressed the shiver that passed through her spine. She hoped her cousin didn’t pick up on how her hand trembled as she took a big mouthful of the cereal. She shook her head as she pretended to diligently chew every morsel of the cereal. “Why?”

Vasavi was the one to react. “Did he ask you out already?”

Nami knew it was time to let out some truth, but not all of it in the hope they would never bring up him again. “He asked me out—”

Vasavi and Ramya’s shrieks interjected, and Nami watched the two girls in silence as they went on about how cool Nami and Rana look together and all other possibilities, including an affair that would make every one of his fangirls super jealous.

Nami waited patiently for their wild imaginations to settle down a bit. When they looked at her, realizing she was not echoing their excitement, she added, “He asked me out, and we hung out once, but I don’t intend to go out with him again.” She raised a finger to hush the girls’ objection and added, “Because I’m here with a goal to extend or come back to Simha for one more semester. I’m not as blessed as you guys are to be Simha students. Rana understands why I said no, and I really don’t want to talk about this again.”

“Okay.” Ramya pouted, making Nami feel guilty about taking such a stern tone with her cousin and the other girl who she had barely known for a week.

“I’m sorry for raising my voice.” She looked away, fighting back the urge to scream in frustration.

Vasavi smiled. “I’m impressed with your determination. Let me know how I can help you in securing another semester at Simha.”

“Thank you, Vasavi.” Nami was glad the topic of Rana was put to an end, and they moved on to other things.

“How was your first day at the sports internship?” Ramya asked as if she was playing detective and had to zone in on the one thing she was trying to keep from her cousin.

“Good.” Yet again her response was a mumble as she stuffed her mouth with cereal on purpose.

“What sport?” Vasavi asked casually. Before Nami could say anything else, Ramya responded, and she could see the sheer surprise in the other girl’s eyes. “Did you say boxing?”

Nami nodded, still chewing on her food.

“Rana is Simha’s boxing champion. What are the odds?” Vasavi was almost yelling with excitement.

“Shut the front door! No way.” The two girls were now off their chairs jumping with joy. Why? Nami had no idea. “Nami, this is a sign. You have to consider going out with Rana again.”

“Don’t be absurd.” Nami brushed the thought away, but she hoped she had known he was a boxer ahead of time. The fact that he didn’t tell her even when they went out on a date added to the friggin’ mess.

“Oh my God, I even heard he lost a game last night. He probably saw you and was all distracted,” Vasavi teased, making Nami glare at her.

“Nami, look at me.” Ramya sat back next to Nami. “You didn’t know he was a boxer when you signed up for the internship. Heck, I didn’t know either so this must mean something. He could be the one, your soulmate.”

Soulmate my foot. Sole rival for sure!

Thankfully, Vasavi jumped to her rescue. “Ramya, let it go. If they are meant to be, you know she will come around, and we can say, told you so.”

“Fine. You can.” Nami managed to smile at the two girls. “Now, who will critique my project ideas?”

“I guess that would be me.” Vasavi raised her hand enthusiastically.

“Thank you, I’m ready when you are.” Nami was there with a goal, and she was going to accomplish it no matter what.
