She pushed away her thoughts and managed to focus on the project for a little bit until Ramya showed up. Just from the way the main door banged against the wall, they knew it had to be their darling roommate. The staff who delivered the food and snacks was very quiet while entering and leaving the housing units.

“Girls, where are you?” Ramya called out with excitement.

“In Nami’s room,” Vasavi called out, laughing, and added, “This girl has something up her sleeve. I can sense it.”

“Really? What do you think?” Nami was intrigued too. “A new place to eat?”

“I doubt it, but—”

“Oh my God, girls, I got us an invite to one of the bike races.” Ramya squealed, and that set off a new excitement in the others.

“What? No way? Nami and I were just talking about the races.” Vasavi hugged Ramya.

“Yeah, this guy, Naveen, who I met at the welcome party has all the connections we need.” Ramya let out a victorious laugh. “Nami, you have to go.”

Nami laughed, hugging Ramya. “I’m not sitting this one out. You know my dad started this with his friends from Simha.”

“Let’s go. Dress appropriately.” Ramya winked and added, “I’m told the boys sometimes like chicks to ride with them.”

Nami’s eyes widened. “I’m going to have so much to report back to my dad.”

“Let’s go! We can’t be late for the races. Today’s race is something special from what I heard.” Nami was halfway into the bathroom to shower and get dressed even as Ramya was sharing the details of the races. She was there to study and secure another semester at Simha, but she would not miss out on the events she could share with her dad as memories and remember her experiences for life just like he did.

Shortly after, Nami looked out of the open-top jeep they were riding in toward the place where the races would be held that evening. Ramya was lost in her own world with the guy she had recently started seeing. He seemed to be into her too, and she had been extra chirpy all week.

Nami’s eyes wandered to Vasavi as she texted with her boyfriend, sending him pictures of her as her hair flew around in the wind. She took a moment to text her dad and then decided not to. It would be a better surprise if she sent him a picture of her from the race. She put her phone away and looked out into the never-ending open area, taking in the beauty that surrounded the campus.

“Look.” Vasavi pointed out to a muddy hill and said, “Do you see the track?”

Nami squinted her eyes. “That’s a mud road, not a track. Is it safe?”

“Apparently, that’s what adds to the challenge and fun,” Ramya chimed in, and her mood was hyped like everyone else’s.

“Interesting.” Nami looked at the mud hill, and an idea started to pop into her head. She looked at Vasavi to share it, but she seemed to be in a deep text conversation with someone. As she sat silently taking in the area, she could only think about designing a race course with the same muddy path but with a path that could be adjusted for complexity.

She let out a scream of joy as she realized it was something she came up with all on her own and didn’t have to feel guilty about the lighthouse idea since it was an idea that stemmed from going on a date with Rana.

A sudden relief swept over her, and she literally jumped out of the open-top jeep when they pulled into the parking area. “I can’t believe this.” She hugged Ramya as they walked toward the group gathered to witness the races.

“I’m stoked you chose to come and not be stuck with your project,” Ramya teased.

“I’m so glad you ran into Naveen at the welcome party.” Nami winked.

“That too.” Ramya leaned closer and whispered, “He is taking me out for the weekend. I’m going for a real adult vacay.”

Nami smiled in response to the joy in her cousin’s eyes. “I can tell you are looking forward to it. Just be careful.”

“It feels a bit too soon, but he is so cool, and yes, my darling cousin, he is a good guy. I’ll be safe, I promise.” Ramya rolled her eyes.

Nami pulled her cousin closer. “Can you find out from Naveen who runs these races? I’d like to talk to them about the race course.”

Ramya shook her head disapprovingly. “What are you up to now?”

“Just curious.” She let out a laugh.

“Okay, I’ll ask.” Ramya left to meet some of Naveen’s friends, and Nami stayed with Vasavi and a couple of other students who joined them to enjoy the races.

When they settled down in their seats, she leaned over to Vasavi and said, “I think I have a better idea than the lighthouse. How about a design for a race course?”
