Vasavi and Ramya exchanged looks. “These two are so cool. She will never get jealous.” Her cousin laughed.

Why would I ever get jealous? That’s just silly even if I were his real girlfriend.

“Can I get to work on her hair and makeup first?” Vasavi asked, and Ramya nodded.

“Yes, take care of that, and then I will style the dress with the mask.” Ramya clasped her hands and swooned. “I’m so excited for your special night.”

“Girls. Chill.” Nami shook her head. “Don’t make it sound like I’m the only one going. You guys should get dressed too.”

“You don’t get it.” Vasavi narrowed her eyes. “You are going with a Simha. Do you know how many girls are willing to kill for your place?”

Nami slapped her palm to her forehead. “I’m sure there is a life threat on me.”

The girls pushed her onto one of the chairs and started working on her. For how meticulously and methodically they worked on her, she wanted to tell them it was all a waste, but she remained silent. It was water under the bridge at that point.

Hours later, she stood looking at herself in the mirror, amazed at what she saw. “I don’t believe this.” She was in awe at how the layers of chiffon in hues of pink pleated for a dramatic look. The long dress had a flowy skirt with an embellished belt holding the fabric closely around her waist. The square neck was lined with crystals and dipped deep in the back, adding a sexy touch to it.

Vasavi blew her a kiss. “You look like a hot and sweet confection. He is going to take a bite of you tonight, for sure.”

Both girls giggled, making Nami glare at them, but something deep inside resonated with the idea. As if her body had a mind of its own, it was longing for the forbidden touch. “Shut up!” she issued a warning, and it was more for herself than her roomies.

“Okay, okay, now sit tight, and we will go get dressed.” Nami ushered them out of the room, settled into a chair, and debated if she should catch a nap in the hour or so her roomies will spend getting dressed. Not wanting to ruin their hard work, she settled down at her desk, careful not to get the dress crumpled.

She pulled out her phone and called her mom. She knew her mom would get a kick out of the way she was dressed because Nami had always refused to put on such elaborate clothing.

She smiled broadly when she saw her mom’s smiling face on the video. “Hi, Ma.”

“Oh wow, baby… look at you. So pretty.” Her mom sounded like her cousin and roommate. “Let me see your dress.”

Nami smiled. “I knew you’d have this reaction.” She walked over to the full-length mirror and flipped the camera view so her mother could see her complete outfit.

“You look so pretty, sweetheart. Like cotton candy in baby pink.” Her mother’s words made her laugh.

“Silly, Mommy.” She shook her head. “Where is Daddy?”

A grim expression passed through her mom’s face. “At work.”

“On a weekend?” Nami’s father was big on work-life balance, and for him to work on the weekends was a novelty. “All okay?”

She shrugged. “You know him. He says he’s got it.”

Nami smiled with confidence. “Then he’s got it,” she responded, attempting to uplift her mom’s mood that had shifted completely. “This is similar to what you had picked out for me a few years back.”

Her mom tsked. “Remember how much I begged you to wear something like this for your sweet sixteen party, and you refused?”

Nami shook her head. “You think I put this on, on my own accord?” She let out a scoff.

“I have to thank Ramya then. She did what I couldn’t get you to do unless… this is all for a boy.”

“Great, here we go again.” She had enough of the boy in her life. Overdose.

“What?” Her mother was taken aback. “What did I say?”

Nami realized she had reacted as she had to her roomies’ comments even to what her mom said. “It’s nothing. Ramya is always trying to set me up with someone.”

Her mom smiled broadly. “Has she been successful?”

“I got to go, Ma.” It was her classic tactic to shift topics with her mom.
