“That’s what he tells me. I’d like to do something for his birthday coming up. Maybe a party.” It’s the least I can do. He really stuck by me while I was in the hospital. Took on my clients and kept them happy. They were still around once I healed enough to struggle my way through work. He even called lawyers, found that advocacy group for Paige, and helped Amber with anything she needed.
Paige and Amber exchange a look across the table. Suspicious. Why does Amber care about—
“No,” I say, standing. “Fuck no, Amber. Were you screwing around with Miguel?”
The two women exchange another look.
“Nope,” Amber says, but it’s too high-pitched for me to believe her.
I throw my hands up. “Is this your twisted idea of payback? I hook up with your best friend, so you do it with mine? We said no more secrets!” I turn to Paige. “You, too. Why didn’t you tell me?”
Paige picks at her food, but she’s too beautiful and sweet at the moment for me to stay mad at her. She changes her phone’s voice to sound like a chipmunk.
My heart skips a beat. I can’t maintain my rage while looking at her, so I turn back to Amber.
“We didn’t ‘hook up’,” she says with air quotes. “It depends on what your definition of ‘hook up’ is. Nothing is going on. We were around each other a lot while you were recovering and we were friendly.” She shrugs. “I haven’t heard from him in a while, mostly because I ghosted him, so I was just wondering.” She stuffs lamb in her mouth and chews.
Both she and Paige avoid eye contact with me. I slump into my chair. Well, this is just great. What a clusterfuck. Why don’t the four of us have a big double wedding while we’re at it? We’ll all take a weekend trip to Vegas and become one big, fucked-up family.
I look at Paige and she cautions a glance my way. My chest warms and I smile. I’d love to marry her. Someday. Right now, she’s enjoying her freedom—her rights—and doesn’t want to deal with any more legal attachments. I understand.
I take her hand and she smiles back at me, securing her fingers in mine.
Someday.
