“It’s not my place to say. She’d never forgive me for that. It was an accident when she was eighteen, and she’s never gotten over it. Or forgiven herself.”

Paige stares at the sheets, hugging her waist.

“Well, she has problems with addiction, but she was never like that before the accident. It completely changed her. She dropped out of her first semester of college, gave up her dream of engineering, and went to a dark place she’s never escaped. I’ve been trying to get her into therapy for years. Our mom tried, too. But you know how stubborn Amber is.”

I take her hand and ask something I can’t remember asking anyone. “Will you help me?”

She responds with a smile. A warm, beautiful, reassuring smile.

“You think you can convince her to stop working for the week and stay home? She rarely listens to me. I don’t care about bills. We’ll figure it out. I need her here so I can make sure she’s stable.”

“Thank you.”

She rests on her side, facing me, and touches my cheek, brushing a long strand of hair from my jaw. For a moment, I almost lean in to kiss her, to express this glowing warmth in my chest. But then she musses up my hair and we both smile.

She gives my nose a boop.

Hoping it won’t ruin our new closeness, I force myself to say, “Also, since Amber has been adamant from day one about me leaving you alone, I think it’s best if we avoid being naked around each other. For now.”

That simple, huh? I was dumb for not being open with her earlier. “You make it sound like a bad thing,” I say. “I’ve been enjoying it. Secretly.”

Her mouth curves playfully, and she wiggles closer.

With a groan, I run my fingers through her hair—soft coconut hair. It’s hard to believe I’m so unguarded and so close to her after weeks of running in the opposite direction. I wish I wasn’t feeling guilty or like I’m betraying my sister. But Amber is asleep. The door is locked. Paige and I are in our own private sanctuary, at least for tonight. “This is what I mean. When you say things like that, you get me hard and I stop thinking rationally.”

She bites her lower lip and glances at my crotch.

I throw a pillow over my head to block her out. “Jesus, I can’t even look at you. Everything you do turns me on.”

She laughs and moves the pillow.

“Wait. Do not finish that. I’m too weak right now.” I rub my forehead. Paige will seriously be the end of me. “Let’s get through the next week and then see how Amber feels. Because god, I want to fu—” I swallow. Keep it classy. “I want to be with you.”

A huge grin makes her even more stunning in the dim light. A blush spreads across her cheeks as she hesitates before saying,

Though her words jab at my heart—who wouldn’t want to hold her?—I say, “I’ll hold you as much as you want.”

“Of course. You deserve to be held anytime you want. I’m sorry no one did that in the past, but I’m here now.” Fuck. What am I saying? Sounds like I’m making promises and commitments I don’t know if I’m ready for.

Her mahogany eyes glisten, and I can’t look away. She’s amazing. So filled with light. I feel like a better man being near her. She presses her index finger against my lips and then touches her own.

“Kiss…you?”

She nods, sending a jolt through my abdomen. Kiss her. Embrace this beautiful goddess of a woman and let her light surround me. What if I kiss her and never want to stop?

She’s already here. She’s already close. What’s one kiss?

I cup her cheek and bring her mouth to mine. It’s sloppy. Her tongue wanders and our teeth clash. Her lips can’t find a rhythm.

It’s glorious. I love sloppy Paige kisses. I can’t stop. I don’t want to. Sex-brain takes hold and I deepen the kiss, running my tongue over hers. Then she moans and I really lose all reason. I roll her onto her back and cover her slight frame with my massive body. Our lips are drenched now, but I won’t stop devouring her. I’ve waited too long, and she tastes like heaven.
