She did need to go home, though.

“Right. I’m taking you home.” I led her back to the centre of the party and set about finding Miss Reynolds a ride home. “Tucker, man!” I called when I saw him.

He turned to me in question, and I didn’t blame him for being suspicious of me.

“Yeah?” he asked.

“Barlow’s had her limit, so I need to take her home. Are you okay to see Hadley home?” I asked, for some reason making sure he could see that I wasn’t any closer to Piper than I had to be.

Tucker nodded. “Sure, man. She okay?”

“She will be.”

We fist-bumped, like we did it all the time, then I took Piper to the car.

Getting her into the car while she was trying to kiss me was hard. Very hard.

Driving home while she ran her hand up my leg was harder. A lot harder.

Before her hand could feel just how hard it was, I took hold of it and held it tightly while I kept my eyes firmly on the road. I didn’t hear the music or whether she talked to me. I just knew I had to keep it together. I had to keep it in my pants and keep it together.

I parked the car and jumped out to help her climb down. She’d been known to fall out while stone sober, I hated to think what might happen this many drinks in. She still fell out, but I caught her, and she came up hard against my chest. I could smell the booze on her breath, but it didn’t turn me off. I wanted to pull her closer but knew that was stupid.

“Hi,” she laughed.

Before I could let ger go, her hands slid up my body and wrapped around my neck. Her lips were aiming for mine again, and I couldn’t believe I fucking turned my head before they could land. The corner of her lips just overlapped the corner of mine.

“What?” she asked, and I heard the hurt in her voice.

I hated that I’d put it there, but there were boundaries I wouldn’t cross.

“We’re not...” I took a deep breath. “We’re not doing this now, Barlow.”

“Not doing what?”

“We’re not having sex.”

She ran her hand over my boner and her face suggested otherwise. “That’s not what this tells me.”

I lifted her hand off me, much to many parts of my body protesting. “Yeah, that’s being vocal enough about this without you encouraging it, Barlow.”

“So, what’s the problem?”

“The problem is we’re not doing this while you’re drunk. Especially not when you’re drunk and I’m stone cold sober.”

“So what?”

Fuck. She was testing my restraint. I had very little left, and it wasn’t helped by the fact that she seemed to think it didn’t matter.

“So, I...” I started.

“No lies, Lombardi.”

Fine. Fuck it. “I’m not doing anything that even has the potential to have you looking at me badly in the morning. We do this now and I would have to apologise, Piper. No matter what our rules are.”

Slowly, she pulled away and nodded. “Okay, Roman.”

I hated it. I hated it, but it had to happen.
