At the end of lunch, Piper and I incidentally met up as we headed inside.

I had to play the part. I was fucking broken inside, but she needed me to be her friend. So, I sucked it up and gave her my best smile as we passed each other.

She stopped in front of me with a wide smile and I picked a piece of grass out of her hair.

“Nature agrees with you, Barlow.”

“Shame it doesn’t look so good on you, Lombardi.”

I frowned in confusion and she pointed to my pants. There was a splattering of dried mud from where I’d fallen.

“Huh,” I mused. “You’d think I’d be better by now.”

“You do fall off your board a lot these days.”

“You smile a lot these days.”

She bit her lip, and it still did something to me. I was man enough to admit that she did something to me without giving in to the urge to wrap my arms around her, sweep her into a romantic dip, and kiss the ever-loving hell out of her.

Just.

She batted me playfully, and followed Hadley to class. I found myself swept up in the throng of kids and Rio and I dropped into our own seats in our own classroom.

“Nice to see you today, guys,” Dunbridge called.

I slouched down in my seat and my leg was already jiggling. I could feel the anger bubbling inside. It was threatening to overtake me. I did my best to hold it, but it was going win eventually.
