“He doesn’t mean it,” Piper assured her.

The nurse chuckled knowingly. “No, of course not.” Then, she winked. “What have you got yourself into now, Roman?” she asked me, humorously exasperated with me for darkening her door once again.

“A fight for a lady’s honour, ma’am,” I replied dramatically.

“Oh, how lovely. Which lady was that?”

“The beautiful Piper here.”

“Oh, no!” Piper scoffed. “You don’t drag me into your stupid fights!”

“S’true. He besmirched your good name, and I gave him a good what-for.”

“Oh, that’s a lovely thing to do for your girlfriend. You two make a wonderful couple.”

That was taking things a bit far. Joke was over now.

“She’s notmygirlfriend,” I told her.

“Oh!” the nurse chuckled. “Even better.” Then she winked again and went about checking me over.

She was just about done when Dunbridge walked in.

“You’ve got a week, Roman,” he said.

I’d been expecting worse. I’d been hoping for worse. But no matter how hard I tried to get expelled, I just couldn’t do it.

I nodded. “Sounds about right.”

“You’ve been warned, son,” he said, then sighed. “Come on, you’ve got a couple of months left and then you’re outta here. Let’s try not to get into any more trouble, hey?”

I sat there as though I was going to behave, but Dunbridge knew me better.

“You know the drill, Roman,” he said, tiredly.

“I do. Off school property by end of Lunch and not back until Monday-week. I’m a very good boy at following the rules, sir.”

“The ones that suit you, yes,” he muttered as he walked out, shaking his head.

I threw Piper my sexiest smirk, but I knew it didn’t reach my eyes. “Suffice to say you’ll need to get the bus home, Barlow.”

She slapped me and stormed out. I just wished I wasn’t bruising quite so spectacularly so I’d felt the full force of it.

The nurse finished up with me. “No sewn stitches today, Roman. Tape will do. You got lucky.”

“Luck? I like to think of it as God given talent.”

She smirked like she knew she shouldn’t encourage me but just couldn’t help herself. “Talent or stupidity,” she said ruefully.

“Roman?” I looked up from the nurse and saw Dunbridge standing in the door.

“Yeah?” I answered sullenly, wondering why he was back again.

He tapped the door awkwardly. “Come to my office, son.”

I frowned as I slid off the bench and started doing up my shirt. “I thought I was supposed to be off school property by the end of lunch?” I sassed.

Dunbridge looked like he had the patience of a monk that day as he nodded. “I know.”
