“Then I think you’ve forgotten what I’ll do to you if you keep this up.”

“I’m just saying, mate–”

“Well, fucking don’t. I know what I’m doing. She won’t get hurt.”

As Rio parked the car he barked a laugh. “Maybe it’s not her I’m worried about, arsehat.”

We headed through the mass of people looking for the booze table, and Steve and Jake. Some jerkoff bumped into me and I was in a foul enough mood that I pushed him back.

“Watch yourself, Lombardi,” he said, getting in my face.

Seemed Rio wasn’t the only one who was forgetting who he was talking to that night.

“I’ll happily make your face a date with the floor, mate,” I snarled.

Rio wrapped his hands around my arms. He might have been a shorter dude, but he was stocky enough that he could offset my pull with well-placed balance. He’d had enough practice after all.

“Can we drink first?” Rio groaned loudly.

The dick who’d bumped me lost all his swagger, ducked his head, and shuffled his foot. “Forget it.”

I threw Rio off me and headed for the tables in search of a bottle.

“You’re a fucking wanker, you know,” he commented dryly.

“Fucker bumped me.”

“Fucker bumped me,” he mimicked sarcastically. “At least if we’ve been drinking, we’re not totally to blame.”

I glared at him for using one of Officer Daniels’ most frustrated and exhausted lines. She’d used it sarcastically, but Rio liked to think it was police insider information. At least when he wanted to rile me up.

“Where the fuck is Stevo?” Rio muttered.

I didn’t much care where the fuck Steve was. I’d just seen Piper and she was watching me. She was chewing on the rim of her cup as she fair burnt a fucking hole in me.

But I’d noticed it was like that.

She and I.

We found each other.

Yeah, fine. I was often looking for her. Not really looking for her, just keeping an eye out for her. Just in case I saw her.

But her?

Shefoundme.

And there were times she just wouldn’t look away.

I didn’t know if it was a challenge or if she just couldn’t help it.

Either way, I needed to look away from her or I was going fuck everything up more than it already was. Besides, Rio was hitting me.

“The fuck?” I snapped at him.

“I said, beer or beer? If you weren’t mooning over Barlow you might have been paying attention.”

“Fuck right off,” I snarled as I opened the beer.
