“You’re a comedian you know,” she said warmly.

“All comedy comes from truth.”

“A cocky comedian.”

“Damn straight.”

She laughed hard and it was infectious. We clung to each other until our laughter stopped and she pulled back to look at me. Her eyes didn’t tell me what she was thinking, but she looked content.

“You seem less funky.”

I had the urge to run my hand through her hair. To trail my fingers down her body. But I resisted. I was just going to be content with what I had.

“I am less funky. Thank you,” I told her.

“Nothing a decent human being would do.”

I sighed dramatically. “I thought we’d talked about this? Carter is a perfectly good human being.”

“Very cute.”

“Oh, I know I am.”

She shook her head. “You wish you were as cute as you think you are.”

“You wish I wasn’t as cute as you think I am.”

She looked away quickly, but I saw the agreement in her smile.

“Don’t worry, Barlow. I won’t tell anyone you like the way I look.”

“I thought we established the other night that I don’t like the way you look?”

“Uh, no. I let you think I’d conceded. In reality, we both know you like the way I look. It’s futile to refute it.”

“Again, I’m surprised you know so many big words.”

“You won’t distract me this time, Barlow. Go on, own it.”

“Why?”

Because why the fuck not? Because I was still a proud guy at heart. Because I could tell myself that knowing this wasn’t one-sided would somehow make it easier.

“Sense of freedom. Humouring me. Relieving yourself of the truth. Take your pick,” was what I told her.

“Fine. I might like the way you look.”

“See, that wasn’t hard was it?”

“Just because you’re attractive, doesn’t mean you should expect people to fawn over you.”

“Firstly, I don’t expect people to fawn over me because very few people do. Do you know how many times I’ve been hauled to the police station just because the cops assume I’ve just done something bad by existing?”

“Can they do that?”

“It would appear they can. Secondly, you just admitted you thought I was attractive.”

“No, I was making a generalisation.”
