“Sore. My head hurts and my knee. The doctor said it’s not a severe break so with the right therapy and rehabilitation, I should be back riding in a month. My dad has already assured me he will find me the best therapists available.”

I sigh, kissing her hand. “That’s good, piccola. But I want you one hundred percent before you are back in the saddle. I don’t want you to worry about the teams, you have plenty of time to get your leg better and still be offered a place.”

She nods, burrowing into my chest. I hold her close until her breathing evens out and she falls asleep. Softly placing her on the pillow, I turn when the door opens to find Elena.

“Christian is fifteen minutes away.” She glances at her daughter frowning when she spots her wet, red cheeks. “Is she okay?”

I glance back at my piccola, dropping a kiss to her forehead before facing her mama. “Her horse, Zeus. He had to be euthanized. He broke his leg in the fall.”

Her hand flies up and she cups her mouth. “Oh my god.” Rushing forward she takes a seat beside the bed and takes Thalia’s hand. I wish I could stay here and do that, just be with her. Hold her. Comfort her. But Greg is right. My piccola has been through enough and she doesn’t need her dad asking questions about me. I say my goodbyes with promises of coming back tomorrow, and leave, my mind racing with thoughts.

Thalia mentioned Zeus didn’t feel right before she went in the ring. Said he felt sluggish. That, along with Melody’s smug look earlier, has got me asking myself some questions.

Questions like, did Mel drug Thalia’s horse?
