She’d never had to be the one to reassure him before, not when it came to his own convictions. But then, the one thing she’d never had to doubt was his goodness. “Because I know you, Lorenzo Capecce. You are a man of honor.”

His larynx bobbed as he swallowed, but he held tight to her hand. “I never want to hurt you again. Definitely not like that. But I need to know you’ll hold me to that honor. You won’t turn a blind eye like our mothers.”

“It’s different for men, principessa,” Papa had said. “I promise.” She glanced back down at the board, though she didn’t really see the pieces.

Then she realized—Helen had been waiting for him after he’d left here the other night. “Wait. That night, after you left, I went to the church. I lit a candle, I was praying for you. At that very time.” She could feel those candles burning inside her even now. Her prayers—her prayers had made a difference. She had lifted him up before the Father even as he faced temptation.

God had heard her. Her fiancé had stood strong.

There was hope for them yet—and the proof of it was in Lorenzo’s slow-blooming smile.
