“I’m not going to argue about it.” Sabina reached for her cup and took a careful sip of the tea. It nearly burned her tongue, but the flavor was full and aromatic. “I won’t forget how you helped me. So if you ever need anything…”

Sally’s nostrils flared, and her hands landed on her hips. “Look, Sabina. First off, I work for Torrio, who’s out to bring your father down at any cost. I’ve been helping Roman gather evidence that he’s guilty of a murder which I’ve come to realize he didn’t commit. And to top it all off, I’ve been sleeping with the man who was supposed to be pining after you. You owe me nothing.”

Sabina leapt to her feet so fast she nearly sent her mug to its side. “Wait—what? What do you mean, that he didn’t commit the murder Roman’s trying to pin on him?”

Sally frowned. “Just something my pimp said right before I went out and saw you. Made it pretty clear it was one of Torrio’s guys.”

The bare bulb above them seemed to glow extra bright. A light in the darkness. A way through the night. “So you haven’t had a chance to tell Roman yet. Do you think he’ll believe you?”

“Don’t know why he wouldn’t. I’ve got no reason to care who did it. Why?”

Sabina let her hostess go and turned back to the bathroom. Her mind raced as she went. “Maybe that’ll be enough to convince him to leave.”

“Leave?” Sally trailed her across the living area. “Leave Chicago?”

“Mm. Papa found out what he’s been doing and ran out of patience. I heard him tell someone he’d better be dead by morning, so I went to Roman’s to try to convince him to leave. He said he’d think about it, but…” But somehow she knew his rush out the back door hadn’t been to save his own skin.

Sally seemed to know it too, given her sigh. “But he’s not going to walk away from what he’d think of as an opportunity to get his man.” She muttered a mild curse and then snapped her fingers. “It’s worth a shot. Get a wiggle on, girl. I might as well go double or nothing and play hero a second time tonight, and you’re going to have to come with me. I’m not letting you walk these streets by yourself.”

Sabina jumped into motion. As she dressed, she kept up a silent litany of prayers. She couldn’t help but grin as she exited the bathroom a minute later.

Sally was obviously thinking the same thing. “He’s going to be surprised to see us together, isn’t he? Maybe that’ll be enough to convince him to listen.”

Sabina grabbed her bag and followed Sally to the door. “It better be.”
