He crouches back down to meet my gaze. “Oh no, love. You can’t expect me to leave you in this state.”

“No, Simon. I swear to you; I am fine. You need to go back indoors, and I promise, I’ll text you later. When the guests wrap up, Amber will have the car to take you to the office where you can disperse. You have a press tour with two local radio stations tomorrow.”

“Won’t you be there?” he queries.

I bite my lips and shake my head. “I just can’t right now. Amber will fill in for me. If anything urgent comes up, she can call me.”

“Okay, love. I won’t push. You go get back to the Myka Johnson that I love to annoy, and I can’t very well do that when you’re like this.”

An incoming call blares through my speakers, taking us out of the moment. My car announces it is Bri and I decline, knowing that she’ll call right back.

“I have to leave. Go back in there and let them know you stepped outside with me to discuss tomorrow’s agenda. And please, don’t say anything to anyone about what you saw today. I will have to put my own spin on my personal life that isn’t so personal when it comes to him.” My phone rings again and as predicted, it’s Bri. I hit the answer button and she comes on, loud as usual.

“Bitch, what the fuck? Why you send me to voicemail and why is Amber blowing up my motha fuckin’ phone?”

“Gotta love, Bri,” Simon quips. He stands back up and his gaze lingers in a poor-Myka way.

“I really need to talk to her. I’ll message you later.” I shift my gear from park to drive and pull out of the space and head down the street to Bri’s shop, which is about two blocks away. While she is talking, I make a left on Sunset and drive two blocks before making a right on Hammond and putting my car in park, pulling up to her shop.

I bust through her door, tears streaming down my face.

“Myka, what is it, honey? Were you fired?” She pulls me into her arms, and I sob uncontrollably.

“No. I was dumped.”

“Did Osiris fire you after all the work you did for, they asses? Those mothafuckas!”

“No, it’s not them. Cornelius showed up at the presser and broke up with me. Gave me a check and said it was over. Four years and an engagement gone down the drain, and I don’t know why.” The waterworks ramp up again, and she rocks me like a big sister comforting her little sister after her first break up.

“I know you’re hurt, honey but believe me when I say that it’s about time. He wasn’t the one for you. He used you to get a leg up and thought he would get more from you, and when you didn’t do that last deal, he proposed to you, that’s when it fell apart for him. That’s for sure when I noticed things were different.”

“I should’ve left him at that party where I met him. Given him your number instead of mine.”

“Girl, no. But honestly, I think this is for the better. Aren’t you going on the four-city tour with the band anyway?”

“Yeah.”

“Now you don’t have to worry about him calling at all times of the day when you're trying to get business done. Just go home and relax and prepare for next week. Do you have your clothes together?”

“No. You know I pack at the last minute.”

“Perfect, now you just pack up his shit, sit it outside your door, and get your shit together. Maybe call my girl Fatima, get you some sage, cleanse your place of his energies, and align your chakras. Get you together and get ready for Monday when you hit the tour circuit before the album release.”

“I knew coming here would help. Thanks, sis. You are the absolute best.” I hug her and she reciprocates.

“Don’t forget to get you some comfort food. We know that you’ll work it off on one of your treadmill runs while at the hotels.”

“I’m cooking all my feelings Sunday. I can sleep on the flight.”

“Oh yeah. Your first stop is in London.”

“Yes. Their hometown radio station wants to do an in-studio interview with a three-song performance. Then returning stateside to Miami before to New York, and finally back here to LA for the album release.”

“Sounds like the perfect recipe to rid yourself of Corny and all his memories.”

I giggle at her reply. “You’re right. He was a bit stale.”

“Yes, that’s why he’s hosting gigs instead of performing at them.”

I smile and press the remote start on my car. “You are the reflection I needed to see. Thank you. Can you call—”

“Already sent her a text when Amber said something was wrong. And she says she has some oil for you too. Just a little dab will block all his energies from resurfacing, and you will move on in your life and career. Now get on, girl. I still have to hand-bead this shirt for the release party. You must look fly at all times.”

“Can I peek? It’ll help me feel better.”

“Uh, no. Bye.” She pushes me on out of the door and locks it behind me so I can’t get back in. I hop back into my car and do as my friend prescribed; one-part holistic healer, one-part herbal cleansing, one-part southern comfort food equals moving on with my life, leaving the past behind.
