“Pssh, girl. I’m fine. No need to tiptoe around me.” I rummage through the items and pull out the picture of us the night he proposed. I had given it to him on his birthday along with keys to a new BMW a few months later. The inscription on the keychain read driving into our future together. Ironically, said memento is also included in the box.

A stray tear trickles down my perfectly applied makeup. Soon, more follow and I am back to where I was the night Simon showed up.

Simon,I think to myself. The trail of unhappiness abruptly stops when I think of how he managed to soothe my frazzled nerves and start an argument with me and took me out of my moment. I smile, reliving Sunday night in my mind.

“Are you okay?” Amber asks, her face scrunched.

“Yes. I said I was, and I meant it.”

“But you were just crying then you started smiling. Like, that’s Jekyll and Hyde shit.”

“I had a moment, moments gone. Time to put on my big girl thong and get back to business.”

Amber shrugs. “If you say so.”

“I do. Now where are we on Osiris and the album release?” I set the box on the floor behind me and fire up my computer, navigating to my email.

“Um, we have most of the major markets ready to run ‘Play’ the day it drops. Lenny sent over the official order of the track list, two local stations want on-air interviews, and Daddy’s House wants to do a local performance that night, five-song minimum, and the owner said he’ll cover door costs for one hundred people. Max cap is two-fifty.”

“Wow. That’s great, actually.”

“Yeah. Whatever you did or are doing, it’s working.”

I take in a deep breath and let it release when butterflies take up residence in my belly. This is gearing up to be the biggest release I have ever done, and I’ve dealt with the teen scene.

“Okay. Have any other offers come in to host a release event?”

“There have been a few, but this one had the biggest draw for a low-key event. And true to Simon fashion, I’m sure he’ll have a party at his place. His brother said it’s his tradition.”

There seems to be a little romance brewing between them. Not that I’ve seen any pda or anything, but you can feel the electricity between them two.

“Is anything going on between you two?”

She smiles and streaks of red cover her cheeks. “No. We just talk. I’m not rushing into anything and since he’s a rocker, they have reputations.”

“Yeah, but he’s not his brother. Now if it was Simon, I’d tell you hell no in every language I can speak, which is two and a half. Still working on my French.”

We both laugh and those blues are officially gone from me.

“Yeah, but you do know Simon is sweet on you, don’t you?”

“Girl, Simon is trying to win this unspoken bet between us.” The memory of him plays with me again, and I pull away from the conversation, thinking about the scent of him that was still on my shirt as I fell asleep after he left; comforting me only like he knows how.

“Myka, did you hear a word I said?”

The heat of my wandering thoughts warms me to a higher level. A trickle of moisture drips down my back.

“Huh? Oh, no. I zoned out thinking of plans for Osiris and the launch of Dead End.” I cover. “What do you think if for the set we use roadblock signs? You know. Make it look like a real-life dead end, mirroring the album cover.”

“Okay, I see your vision. Let me call around and see if we can get the props. Is it a go for Daddy’s House?”

I think about the fan base, those ladies from the last performance who were promised backstage passes at the next gig, and the potential sell-out of the small venue. It would certainly generate the buzz I want. “Sure, why not. The moment the place sells out, let me know.”

“You got it. Now what are you going to wear?”

“For what?” I respond. I’m hardly paying attention to Amber as I’m looking over the emails for my other artists and putting things in motion for them.

“The release festivities.”
