“Maybe.” He shrugs and leans his head against the back of the seat.

“So, tell me about her.” I encourage. Propping my arm against the same back of the couch and rest my head on my hand.

“Well, I was only sixteen at the time so it's not like there was a real romance there. Her name was Iris. She had flowing blonde hair that was straight even in the rain. Blue eyes and creamy skin. She was beautiful. Anyway, we met one day at the shopping mall. I was with Steven and his friends; Sebastian had stayed home that day.” He adjusts his position to match mine, tucking one leg under his butt. “Anyway, I wanted to grab some cookies and went to the shop to grab me some. There she was, working behind the counter. I stumbled over my words but she smiled and blushed and asked if I wanted a cookie. I nodded my head yes and held up three fingers. I don’t know why my voice was absent at that moment. On the receipt she wrote her number down and told me I was cute, giving me the boost I needed in my confidence.”

“Aww, that sounds sweet. What happened? I mean aside from what your mom told me.”

“I guess I wasn’t enough for her. She wanted someone more experienced and older, I suppose.”

“I know how it feels to not be enough. I never had that issue with Cornelius. He just wanted all of my time.” The strap on my top slides down my shoulder.

Simon puts it back in place, his touch lingering longer than it should.

The softness and warmth of his fingers slowly trail along my skin, sending tingles throughout my body. My breath catches for just a moment. Not long enough for him to notice, at least I don’t think so, but definitely putting me on alert.

“I honestly don’t blame him,” Simon remarks.

A surge rushes through me and my insides are alive with possibility. Our gazes hold longer than normal, and I can feel the energy building between us.

Licking my lips before drawing the bottom one between my teeth, I watch his chest rise and fall at a much faster pace.

His eyes seem to have a shinier appearance and his pierced nipples draw into tight little baby buds. He wets his lips and leans toward me. The desire in his eyes is undeniable.

It calls deep within me. I move toward him, closing the space between us. What am I thinking? This is my client. I can’t do this. My inner monologue takes over and talks me off the edge.

“Sounds like our neighbors have calmed down. I think I’ll go try to get some sleep. Goodnight, Simon. See you in a few hours.” I stand and walk to the room, closing the door nearly all the way. I can still see him through the space as he moves over to the sleeper side of the sectional. He reaches up and turns off the lamp, shutting out all light.

I close my eyes and pray sleep finds me soon.
