Having already showered, I stroll into the bathroom and finish my basic grooming and primping. You know, teeth, face, hair. I then put on my suit. It’s a bit more risqué than I thought once it is on. The bottom ties at the hips and the top covers the front, the most important parts, but the back ties with a very thin piece of clear material that almost resembles a fishing line, stronger than the straps they put inside clothes for hanging. Brianna fashioned this little number for a charity fundraiser I was a part of. Once I’m satisfied with the way the suit fits, I apply my sunscreen, toss on a little lip gloss, and a pair of flip flops later, I’m out the door and walking to the beach party.

The sand in between my toes feels weird. I stop at the bar to shake it out of my slides. It defeats the purpose because as soon as I put them back on, I feel the grittiness of the small grains again. I walk over to the DJ booth where a line of women is surrounding him and the speakers, putting themselves on notice of availability for the single men prowling around.

“Whoa, move over ladies, the boss has made her way to see me,” DJ Reggie says when he sees me walking up the steps of the raised platform. “No offense, but damn Myka. Baby girl, you look amazing in that two-piece.”

“Thank you, Reggie. It’s one of Bri’s designs.”

“Please let her continue to use you as her model. That girl knows how to show off all your attributes in a tasteful yet hot way.”

“Reggie, stop.” I blush.

“All right, all right. Now, where are your boys? I want to get them on a live cut in because this is also being streamed and then I’ll mix in a montage of their top hits before dropping that gold single. Sounds good?”

“Yeah, that sounds amazing. Maybe we can get some photos to post on their site and the labels. A few with party-goers and then we will be out of your way.”

“Aww, you leaving me?”

“Yes, we have a flight to NYC in the morning and then back home for the release.”

“Okay. Cool. Now a personal question. How did Cornelius let you come down here looking like that all by yourself?”

The question takes me out of the moment, and I fight off the emotions. “Oh, we’re not together anymore.”

“Shit. I’m sorry, boo. I had no idea.”

“Thanks. But I’m okay. Being with the guys has really helped me refocus. When I heard you were going to be here too, I knew a DJ Reggie party would help raise my spirits.”

“You know I got my best boo. Just don’t tell my wife.”

We both laugh.

“Where is she anyway? I’d love to see my soro.”

“She’s out of town on a business trip. I’ll let her and the kids know they missed you.”

“That’s good. Now let me go mingle with the crowd.”

“Go do your thang, Miss.”

I climb down the steps and a pair of very fit, very attractive men offer their hand to help me descend.

“Oh, thank you,” I declare flirtatiously.

“No problem. Let me get you a drink.” One of the men offers.

I look up to Reggie who is shaking his head and then glance back to the gentlemen who are eyeing me like a piece of meat.

“Um, no thanks. I’m working right now, but I am sure one of these lovelies may be willing to take you up on your kind and generous offer.” I wander off, before they have a chance to respond. Another thing about sand is that it also slows down a planned quick getaway.

I make a few rounds with the patrons and snap a few pics to keep up appearances on the social platforms before making my way to the ocean. Sometimes staring out over the water brings me a peaceful calm to the turmoil I feel. It’s crazy how one minute I think everything is going right, then boom...it all falls to pieces. I’m not sad over my breakup with Cornelius. To be honest, I felt it coming long before he called it off. I’m just angry about the way he did it. No class at all, and at my clients’ press party. One could say he did it in a fit of jealousy. But what did he have to be so insecure about? I was his and no one else could’ve changed that.

“Ah, here you are. I thought you may need some company and a drink,” Sebastian says, taking up real estate beside me.

“Aw, thank you.” I take the beverage with the paper umbrella and sip slowly not sure what to expect. “Wow, this is good. Tastes like sour apple but it’s red in color.”

“Yeah, this is another one of Simon’s concoctions.”
