“Thanks, Adam,” Mateo said after McNolty left and we were alone.

“No need to thank me.”

“Sure, there is. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

“Yes, you could,” I said. “But I’m glad I could help speed things up a little.”

He studied me a long moment. “Time was important.”

I nodded. We both knew I would do anything for Faith.

“I appreciate everything you’ve risked to do this, Adam,” he said. “Don’t think that’s gone unnoticed. But you need to stay vigilant.” He rubbed a hand over his face. “Your part in this will not be made public, but we haven’t uncovered Pittman’s source yet. He may be locked up, but he has reach and people loyal to him that we still don’t know about. So, I can’t promise there will be no leaks.”

“I hear you,” I said.

“So, until the trial is over, keep your head down. Watch yourself.”

“Thanks for the warning, but I know how to take care of myself.” Six years in prison had taught me that, if nothing else. “I’ll be fine. You just take care of business, alright?”

He nodded. “Of course.”

Something heavy filled the room.

We’d done what we set out to do, but it didn’t feel finished. Maybe in the course of his investigation he’d figure out who’d attacked Faith and I could rest easy. Still, there was nothing more to be said, so I turned and offered him my wrists again so he could cuff me and lead me back to my cell for appearances.

He handcuffed me, then put a hand on my shoulder. “It’s late. Just hang in there a few more hours,” he said. “I’ll make sure you get bailed out by tomorrow.”

Unbidden, Faith’s face filled my mind. I’d be free tomorrow, and I could go to her. Explain everything. Beg her forgiveness. Ask her to give me another chance. To start over with no more secrets between us.

But as Mateo led me toward a jail cell in cuffs, part of a plan or not, all I could recall was the look of sheer betrayal on her face, even after she’d tried to hold on and give me another shot, against all odds. Believe in me. In us.

Go to hell...

Sorry, baby, I’m already there.
