CHAPTER TWENTY

Adam

The air suddenly felt chaotic, yet slowed down.

I’ll never have babies because of you...

What?

Churning with confusion, the facts weren’t clicking. What did she—?

Voices echoed as I moved in slow motion to follow Faith, but the crash of splintering wood and angry cursing sped it all up. I spun back to find Matthew and CJ bowed up to each other, a deck chair busted between them as Mateo tried to break it up.

“Guys—” Mateo held out a hand.

“Look, I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about,” CJ drawled, his voice slurred from one too many drinks as his eyes darted among the crowd, looking for supporters. He finally landed on my brother. “Tobias. Buddy. Get your wife’s brother on a leash, would ya?”

Without batting an eye, Matthew drew back a fist and cold-cocked CJ in the jaw. “Fuck you and your leash, you son of a bitch.” They fell to the ground in a brawl. “Does it make you feel good to hurt women, motherfucker?”

It’s him...

Mateo tried to pull Matthew off, but he was stronger than he looked.

Suddenly, the details of Faith’s dreams burst into my brain like fireworks, exploding with lightning clarity. A guy in a hoodie. Sickening sweet breath.

It’s him...

A white-hot fury like I’d never known before blazed through my system with the speed of a wildfire tasting oxygen for the first time.

CJ? My brother’s best friend?

Stabbed my woman?

CJ stabbed Faith.

I burst forward with a furious growl and grabbed Matthew by the back of his shirt, throwing him aside. CJ blinked up at me, blood dripping from his split lip, his left eye swollen.

“You work for Pittman.” It wasn’t a question.

He glowered as he clambered to his feet, swiping his mouth. “Fuck you, bitch,” he bit back.

But I was locked on my target now.

I’ll have my men handle it...

Cyrus’s words after I’d told him about Sam Poteet’s deception echoed through my mind at the same moment CJ yanked a large pocketknife from his pocket and spun on me, making the crowd gasp and part.

I didn’t flinch. Prison had taught me better, and I was nobody’s fucking bitch.

I tackled him back to the ground, knocking the knife from his hand. “You tried to kill her,” I bit out between brutal blows to his already bruised face. “Now I’m gonna fucking kill you!”

I’ll never have babies...

I lost all sense of time and space as red filled my vision. His blood. The blood flooding my head. I’d never been more enraged in my life. I was demon-possessed.

I felt hands clawing at me. Trying to pry me away. Echoes of people calling my name. Yelling at me to stop.

But I was done.
