CHAPTER FOUR

Adam

So, Faith had a brother... who was currently staring at her like she’d grown a second head.

“I’m sorry, a what?” he sputtered.

“You inherited the Redemption Road Church.”

Something in Faith’s baby blues gave away how this news hurt her, no matter how much she hid it. The tightness of her smile. How her crossed arms hugged her torso a little stiffer.

Matthew frowned. “But you... I...”

She nodded. “I know.”

“I didn’t—I never even saw the inside of the place till the funeral,” he said. “I didn’t grow up there. You all did.”

She didn’t move. Not a muscle. Though I could tell it took all she had to not cave in on herself as a sheen of tears glistened in her eyes that she quickly blinked away.

“Yes...” she whispered.

I glanced toward the window as an older model black car rolled by, making me snap to attention. Was that the same one I’d seen at Rudy’s? Had Guidry and his guys found her too? Already?

“Sorry to cut this little reunion short, guys,” I said curtly. “But we need to go.”

She whipped her head around. “You can go.”

I shook my head. “Not leaving here without you, Faith. I’m trying to keep you safe.”

Matthew pointed between us. “Are you two—?”

“No!” we both said in unison, glaring at each other.

Her gaze was fierce, standing her ground, wanting to stay and have a warm, fuzzy family reunion. But she didn’t know what I knew, and I needed to get her the fuck out of there.

I lowered my voice and stepped closer. “Did you miss what I told you out there?” I pointed toward the door. “Your attack wasn’t random. And the guys who targeted you and tossed your place know where you are.” I tilted my head at her as her face grew pale. “How do you think I found you?”

Her eyes flicked to a very concerned-looking Matthew, then back to me. “Grace told me last night... but you were there?”

“I went looking for you,” I said. “I think it had just happened.” I left out the fact that I’d heard Bastien and his goons planning her demise. “They found your detailed little itinerary in the trash, same as I did.”

“Oh, shit.” She sat heavily back in her chair, her hand to her stomach. “What do these people want from me?”

Money, Bastien had said... or alluded to. But she clearly had no knowledge of it.

“You okay?” Matthew asked. “Are you gonna be sick? Do you need some water or something?”

She lifted grateful and slightly sad eyes his way. “No. Thank you. I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry? For what?”

“For bringing all this drama to your doorstep. I just wanted to...” She pressed two fingers to the space above her nose. “Hell, I don’t know what I wanted. I haven’t exactly been myself lately.”

He turned a chair to face her and leaned over on his knees. “You probably wanted what I’ve wanted since I was a kid. To know the other side. And probably to hate me a little bit. But, for the record, I hope you don’t.” He smiled. “I’ve always wanted sisters.”

She choked out a small laugh just as the black car drove by again in the opposite direction. I waited until it was down the street, then turned back.

“Okay, we’re officially done here.” I looked to Matthew. “You seem like a cool guy. I hope you make it to Redemption sometime to collect your inheritance and catch up on all this family togetherness, but in the meantime, I need to get Faith safely out of here.”
