Gripping his shoulders, I dug my short nails into his skin as the waves came crashing in. “Oh God, oh God, oh—”

Nothing but sensation rocked me as my whole body lost its collective mind, and he caught me as I slumped against him on the way down, slipping his hand from my shorts and slowly sucking his fingers clean with a deep groan.

Then real life waved its hand.

What had I just done?

I’d asked for this, though. Literally asked. And was still astride his massive hard-on, so I needed to help him with that at the very least.

I ran my hand along the large bulge tenting his sweatpants, but he quickly put his hand over mine, stopping me.

“Adam—”

“Shhh,” he said.

Confused, I backed up to try to see his face better. “Don’t you want—?”

“More than breathing,” he said, squeezing my hand and moving it aside. “But not like this. That was for you.”

For me.

I tried lifting my leg off him, apologies at the ready, but the pain in my side said otherwise. Still, I didn’t have to. Because this man turned me over slowly, extracted himself from my bed, and kissed me on the forehead. “Go to sleep.”

Was he kidding? “What are you doing?” I managed.

“Go to sleep,” he repeated softly. “I’m taking a shower.”

I pulled the sheet up to my eyes. “Adam?”

He stopped at the foot of my bed and turned back to me. “Yeah?”

I opened my mouth to say... something. Thank you? That seemed so ridiculous and lame. He’d acted like seeing me was repugnant ever since he’d gotten out of prison, avoiding even breathing the same air, walking the other way every chance he had. Yet now he’d just violated his parole to come find and protect me, took on a dog, soothed my nightmare, and gave me a mind-blowing orgasm with no thought of reciprocation.

Not like this.

Thank you didn’t seem appropriate.

Saying how hot it was to be in his arms again didn’t seem quite right either... because that was the bigger elephant in the room. He certainly hadn’t been repulsed a few minutes ago. Hard-ons don’t lie. And Adam Bishop had a raging one.

When I didn’t say anything, he reached down and squeezed my big toe.

Answering my silence the same way.

He tapped on the wall as he disappeared around it. “Night, Faith.”

When the smellof sugar and coffee reached my nose, I stirred and stretched, feeling warm and languid until—shit—until remembering I couldn’t stretch anymore. I traced the fresh scar on my lower abdomen tenderly, then the one on my side. Ironically, that one was the bitch. Did less damage overall, but it never let me forget it was there.

The sound of a curtain sliding accompanied a bright stream of light, and I covered my eyes. “Mmmm. Bright.”

“Time to face the day.”

I jumped, not expecting the male voice, and then remembered.

Oh, crap.

I remembered. As memories of last night rolled forward, and facing the day held so many truths.

“I took your dog out. Then went to the lobby and grabbed coffee and a few donuts,” Adam said. “I can’t guarantee the quality of either, but it’s food. I’ve had worse,” he added.
