CHAPTER ELEVEN

Faith

Muffled music spilled out from Rudy’s bar as the night crowd trickled in through the double side doors. The small gravel parking lot in the back didn’t get much use during the day, as the front parking spots could handle the regular greasy bar food lunch-goers and day drinkers. Nights and weekends, however, the dive joint was hopping.

It wasn’t a place I frequented much in the past, but that could change now. Everything else was lately. Like Daddy knocked the world off-kilter, and now everyone had to wobble around and find their places. Or maybe not everyone. Maybe just me.

My phone buzzed with a text on my front seat, and I glanced over.

Hope:What are you doing?

I glanced around guiltily as if cameras might be filming my very presence.

Me:Nothing, why?

Hope:Grace said you’re going out with Adam?

I blew out a breath.

Me:Grace has a big mouth, and yes, I’m meeting him at Rudy’s.

Hope:Rudy’s?

Me:Like there’s a lot of options in Redemption? Yes.

Hope:I know, just messing with you. Tobias is there too with the crew. Don’t let anyone hit on him. ;) And please don’t walk around alone. Be vigilant! Please!

Me:I will, I promise.

Hope:And text me every hour.

I rolled my eyes and texted back, smiling in spite of myself.

Me:Yes, mom.

Hope:But have fun.

I looked at the happy people entering the bar.

Me:I’ll try.

Hope:So, Matthew just called me. Has he called you?

As if on cue, my screen filled with his name. I pushed the button to accept.

“Hey, Matthew,” I said, putting it on speaker.

“Hey, Faith,” he said, his tone sounding a little nervous. It had to be really weird to inherit a grown family you’d always watched from afar. Maybe like inheriting a grown brother you didn’t even know existed.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“Well, I just talked to the attorney, Mr. Wexley,” he said. “That was a mind boggle.”

“Oh, wow,” I said. “I bet it was.”

“And then I called Hope to—well, to introduce myself, I guess, and ask her to translate.”

“That’s smart, she’s good at that,” I said, smiling at two women walking past that were in my jiu jitsu class back before life turned upside down. “Did she help?”
