I must’ve drifted off while we were driving, because when I sit up and take a look outside, I see that the scenery surrounding us has changed. Evanoff’s kill house was located deep in the woods and the last thing I remember seeing was a long stretch of winding road lined with tall eucalyptus trees. Now we’re in the middle of civilization. There are strip malls on every corner and the gas station we’re parked at is bustling.

“Where are we?” I ask, raising my arms and pulling them into a long stretch.

“Just outside of Caspian Valley.” He offers. “We got a tip that Evanoff was heading back into the city, so we’re going to head there.”

I give him a nod as I slowly rub my eyes and let out a long yawn. I’m a lot more tired than I thought and the fumes filling the car probably didn’t help. I chance a glance back at our stow-away.Poor thing. She’s still passed out and probably will be for a while.

“Come inside with me.” Dallas says, grabbing my attention as he lingers just outside of his open door. “You can caffeinate and stock up on all the junk food your little body can handle.” He says, wiggling his brows. “My treat.”

I throw him a broad smile and slide out to join him.

One of my favorite things about Dallas is that he never makes me feel weird about money or my lack thereof. I’m sure he’s noticed by now that things always seem to be “his treat” but he never makes me feel bad about it. He acts as if I’m the one doing him a favor, which is as ridiculous as it is charming.

After loading up on snacks and taking the longest pee of my life, Dallas and I head back to the car and find Niko and Rome already ready to go in the front seat.

“All set?” Rome asks, as Dallas and I slip into the back seat.

“Yup,” Dallas retorts with a nod, “and… we brought snacks.”

Without warning, packs of gummy candy and chips start raining down in the front seat. I noticed he bought way more than we needed for one stakeout, and now I know why. I have to stifle my laugh as two most stoic people I know sit there silently as bags and bags of snacks bounce off of their heads.

Then the bickering starts.

I still can’t fully wrap my head around how these three became best friends. They’re all so different from each other, but I guess theirs is a bond that doesn’t really need to make sense. It just is.

I had a bond like that, too. Once. In another life.

I turn to grab my seatbelt, and when I notice a discrepancy, I stop in my tracks.

“Uh, guys?” I ask, turning around to eye the space behind me. “Where is she?”

Their bickering dies down as all of their heads snap towards me.

“What are you talking about?” Rome asks, furrowing his brow. “She should be right there.”

“Well, she isn’t.” I explain, turning back around to face them. “She’s gone.”
