It’s the first time I’ve questioned any of this, but the coincidences are piling up.

What if this is some kind of trap?

A booming sound shifts my attention to the center of the room and I stare in disbelief as a huge wood beam comes crashing down to the floor. Pieces of cinder and ash fly into the air, coming dangerously close to me, and I instinctively scream at the top of my lungs for help.

I don’t give a fuck if this is a trap. I need to get out of here.Now.

I hear one of her friends offer her words of comfort while another one steps in. “Stand back!” He shouts. “I’m going to kick the door open.”

I heed his warning, even as the flames lick up the stairs and black soot starts to coat my skin. There doesn’t seem to be any gasoline up here, but because Dimitri doused me in it, I’m still only seconds away from being lit up like the Fourth of July.

With three solid kicks, the double doors burst open and a set of powerful arms throws a large hoodie over me before pulling me to safety. I don’t have any strength left to react. I just flop limply in his arms and pray like hell that I’ve made the right choice. I don’t even know who these people are, but something in my gut tells me I’m safe and as the last bits of my consciousness slip away, and the darkness pulls me under, I cling to that thought and that thought alone.
