-CHAPTER FIVE -

Hazel

Breathe. Just breathe.

I push the key in the door, but my hands are shaking wildly so I struggle to work it all the way in.

“Here…” Noah places a hand on my shoulder, and I sink into his touch. He moves around, grabbing the keys and gliding it in with the calmness only a professional athlete could exude. “There we go.”

His voice echoes inside a tiny hotel room. I stand, glued to the spot.

The opened door smashes back against the wall. Without stepping inside, I can see the back wall of the room from the corridor. There’s a double bed pushed against the wall and either side of the bed is a modest bedside table, each topped with a dimly lit lamp.

“Wow…” Noah ducks under the doorway and hunches over as he steps in the room. I giggle to myself, and he looks back at me, his face amused. “What are you laughing at?”

“You look like a giant. Either that or you’ve shrunk the room…” I say, catching my laugh with my hand.

“Hey, be quiet!” Noah chuckles, his chest bouncing. “I got you this… this… Well, I guess it counts as a room…”

Noah looks around, his brows pulled in a twisted expression.

I poke my head in the door and to my left, there is a tiny bathroom. There’s a toilet and the smallest shower I’ve ever seen, but I can’t see the sink until I push the rolling door back.

“Well, the council has been saying that space is tight in the CBD for some time now…” I shrug. “I guess we should have listened shouldn’t we.”

Noah steps over and although he’s smiling, I suddenly feel my body tense up. I still can’t believe he’s here in front of me. The second I heard his firm tone from behind me in the lobby, my ovaries clenched up and they haven’t released since.

It’s his smell.

It’s his looks.

It’s him…

“Why…”

I hesitate, my finger pulling at my lip, wondering whether I should ask the question that’s burning my tongue. Noah inches closer, and even though the room is tiny, I feel like he’s crowding me.

But in the best way possible.

“Why what?” Noah asks, his husky voice a whisper.

“Why did you come after me?”

My body’s trembling. I dodge his hungry eyes, unsure what the hell he’s doing. This is Noah Edwards. He was just at the bar, chatting with a stunningly beautiful woman. She was his for the taking, and fuck, even as a woman, I could see that she was a stunner. What kind of man wouldn’t be back there with her right now?

I look up. To my amazement, Noah’s smiling. His eyes are soft and gentle. The beefy man from downstairs is gone. The raging hockey player I saw on the ice tonight has been tamed. His authority has evaporated and all that’s left is this gentle giant before me.

He’s holding doors and carrying my suitcase. He’s demanding hotel rooms for me and he’s not taking no for an answer.

That doesn’t mean anything, Hazel.

“I couldn’t let you walk in downtown Vancouver late at night all by yourself, could I?” Noah’s moving in closer. He’s licking his lips, but surely I’m imagining that? My stomach clenches as his breath touches my lips. “A beautiful woman like you… Alone in the dark?”

“Uh, yeah, I guess… Thanks?”

My throat feels thick. The tiny hotel room closes in around us, and when I take a step back, my ass hits the wall. Noah advances.

“Hazel,” Noah breathes, and his palm smacks against the wall as he leans over and traps me under his gorgeous muscle-soaked body. His breath is stifled, and his pupils are growing. “Hazel… I’m going to say something I’ve been holding onto for a long time. I’m tired of fighting inside my own head. Day and night. Over and over again…”
