“Braden! Where’d you go?” Hannah whined as she walked up to us.

“I saw Ian come in,” he said.

“God, Ian, you broughther?” Hannah groaned. “Seriously?”

Kyler stiffened, and I squeezed her shoulder.

“Yeah, I asked Kyler to come with me tonight. Got a problem with that?” I spat.

“You know she’s a slut, right? She’s done everyone on the whole football team. Sometimes more than one at the same time. I heard she even took it up the ass.”

Kyler started to walk away, and I tried to grab her hand to keep her from leaving, but she just pulled it out of my grasp and disappeared into the crowd of people. Every cell in my body was screaming at me to go after her, but I had some trash to take out first.

I turned back to Hannah and got right up in her face. “No, shehasn’tslept with the whole football team, because I’d remember if I’d slept with her. And if I hear one more fucking word about Kyler fromanyone, they’ll have me to answer to. Understand?”

“Dude, back off,” Braden said, putting a hand on my shoulder.

“That goes for you too,” I said, glaring at him. “I like you, Hicks, but if you fuck with my girl, you’re dead to me. Got it?”

“I know that,” he said. “What makes you think I don’t?”

“Hannah?” I asked, staring daggers at her.

“Got it.God.When did you turn into such a dick, Ian?” she scoffed.

“I’veneverbeen okay with people spreading crap around that isn’t true,” I spat. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go try to salvage my date with Ky. If it’s even salvageable.”

I wandered off in search of Kyler, and luckily, I spotted her talking to Melissa, who had a hand on her arm like she was trying to comfort her. I weaved my way through a sea of people, and it took way too fucking long.

“Ky,” I said as I finally made it to her. “I’m sorry about Hannah.”

“It doesn’t matter,” she muttered, barely audible over the sound of some godawful pop song.

“Yes, it does. She was out of line, and I’m sorry you had to hear that. Let me try to make it up to you, baby. Please.”

Damn it. I really needed to learn tothinkbefore I spoke when I was around her. I hadn’t even realized I’d called her “baby” until after I’d said it. But I wanted her to be okay with it. Because I wanted this night to be the start of something, not just a one-off.

“It wasn’t his fault, Ky,” Melissa said. “Just give him a chance.”

Kyler nodded, and this time I pulled her into a hug with both arms. She tentatively wrapped her arms around me, and an overwhelming feeling of rightness washed over me as I thought about how she fit perfectly in my arms, like she belonged there.

“Come dance with me, Ky,” I said. “Forget about her. Hannah, I mean. Not Melissa.”

She chuckled. “Okay. You coming, Liss?”

“No, you two go have fun,” Melissa encouraged her. “But, Ian, if you break my girl’s heart, I’ll break your face. Understand?”

“Yes, ma’am,” I said with a smile. “You know, we should go on a double date sometime. If Eric is cool with it.”

“Maybe,” she said with a shrug.

I smiled, then turned back to Kyler. “Come on, Ky. I seem to remember promising to show you a good time.”

“If ‘good time’ is code for lame dance moves,” she chuckled.

I laughed. “I’ll have you know I happen to be an excellent dancer.”

“Prove it,” she teased.
