His eyes went wide, and I immediately felt awful. I knew Braden would never hurt me. Over the past month, he’d become almost as good of a friend to me as Melissa was. Honestly, lately, it seemed like I spent more time with him and Ian than I did with Melissa.

But logic wasn’t really prevailing at the moment. I just couldn’t handle having anyone’s hands on my body. Not after the last person to touch me – the person who was getting his rocks off by making my life a living hell – had just cut my neck.

Well, that wasn’t true. There wasoneperson whose hands I wanted on me. And he was nowhere in the vicinity.

But I couldn’t find the words to verbalize any of that.

“Okay,” Braden said slowly. “Okay, I’m not touching you. Jesus, Ky. You’re bleeding. What happened?”

I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t lift my hand to wipe the blood off of my neck. I could barely even breathe. All I could do was keep crying.

He pulled his phone out, furiously tapping at his screen. “If you don’t want to talk to me, that’s fine. But I’m staying right here until reinforcements show up.”
