Because lord, did I want to go there. I’d already been impressed by the way Maddie had stood up to Logan. Not many people were willing to challenge him as openly as she had on multiple occasions in just the past few days. And then dancing with her, feeling her rise tothatchallenge even though the steps hadn’t been familiar to her, doing her best to match me…

She might not have quite kept up with the actual moves, but she’d given herself over to the rhythm rather than stiffening up. She’d trusted me to guide her. And the feel of that sleekly curvy body against mine…

From the little I’d known of her back in high school, I’d never have expected to find her this attractive. She’d been pretty, sure, but she’d also been the studious type, only stepping into the spotlight when she was taking on one cause or another. I’d had no idea that passion permeated so many other parts of her life. What would it be like to soak it up in every possible way?

To move my hands over those curves without clothes between us. To claim those pouty lips. To hear the sounds she’d make as I unraveled her. To find out just how wellshecould unravel me.

Fuck. Just thinking about it was getting me hard, like I was a preteen who’d just caught a glimpse of a hot girl’s cleavage and not a grown man who should have better self-control. She had an effect on me, all right.

And she was so much more than just a body. There was that boldness that drew me to her, but she had a caring streak a mile wide to go along with it. She barely knew me, and I was best friends with the guy who was giving her the hardest time in the history of the universe right now, but she’d still offered to use her contacts to see if I could try out one of those experimental prosthetics.

If she’d had any idea how much we weren’t telling her—how muchIwasn’t telling her…

A knot of guilt twisted my stomach. I glanced over at Logan as I reattached my prosthetic. “Are we really going to keep Maddie in the dark about the bigger picture? I mean, now that she’s kind of crashed our party already.”

Logan’s eyes hardened. “Are you kidding me? She’s already pushing her way into places she doesn’t belong just over her car. Nothing good would come from getting her involved in the rest.”

His voice was firm, but I couldn’t help pushing a little harder. “Is anything good going to come out of hiding it from her?”

Logan spun on me, his eyes flashing, and loomed with the few inches he had over me in a way I’d normally only seen him use on perps we were intimidating. “No one should say anything to Madelyn aboutanyof our work other than her stolen car. Or do you have a problem with that?”

There was an understated threat in his voice. I swallowed hard, abruptly ashamed of provoking him. I knew what a sensitive subject it was, and he knew more about that area of our investigations than Dexter or I did. As much as we’d all worked on it together, it was his pet project. He should know what could get us into more danger.

“No, man, of course not,” I said. “If you say that’s a no go, then it’s a no go. I just thought it was worth asking.”

Logan held my gaze for a few seconds longer before his stance relaxed. As he turned to tuck the rest of his belongings into his bag, I adjusted the sock over my stump to make sure it wasn’t creased in an uncomfortable way against the prosthetic. It’d taken me a while to adjust when I was a little kid, but for most of my life, wearing the thing had been as normal as putting on a pair of sneakers was for anyone else.

We headed out together, and I groped for another topic of conversation. Something that had nothing to do with Madelyn or anything else that might piss my best friend off. But as we stepped out of the building, Logan’s phone dinged with an incoming text.

He pulled it out of his pocket and paused in mid-stride. Then he shot me a tight smile. “The guy I talked to at the club came through. We’ve got a new lead to check out—and we should get on it fast.”
