I swallowed thickly. Funny how he could say that so easily, and Logan who’d known me so much longer hadn’t batted an eye at breaking it.

The bright yellow sign of the dollar store beamed at us from the corner. I slowed as we reached the entrance, feeling abruptly shy. “Well, this is me.”

Beckett turned toward me, so close with his handsome face intent on mine that a waft of heat rushed through my body. His voice dipped lower. “Then it’s time for me to try my luck. Have dinner with me tomorrow evening?”

“Um.” Yes, I was a straight-A student, but somehow I’d lost all my words faced with that question. “You mean like a date?”

I could have smacked myself in the forehead, but I had to clarify, just to be sure. Beckett’s renewed smile showed no sign of offense.

“I’m just looking to see how much else we have in common and find out all the other fascinating things about you. And if that sparks into something more, I’m not going to argue. I’m happy to call it a date if that doesn’t make you feel pressured to do anything more than enjoy some good food and conversation.”

I had a hard time imagining this guy putting on the pressure like a randy high school dude. I hesitated for just a second longer with a brief thought of Logan and the Vigil guys—but I didn’t owe any of them anything, especially not my jerk of a stepbrother. Why shouldn’t I have some fun and see where this could go?

I beamed back at Beckett with a leap of my heart. “It’s a date, then.”
