When Slade raised his head, I didn’t hesitate again. I leaned in and met him halfway for our first real kiss.

Slade tucked his hand around the back of my neck, parting his lips just slightly as he drew me against him. My fingers clutched the front of his shirt, all the rest of me absorbed in his passionate claiming of my mouth. His tongue flicked out to tease across my bottom lip. The cinnamon flavor that laced it set me even more on fire.

His other hand dropped to my waist. At his tug, I found myself straddling him. Our bodies seared against each other, his arm sliding around my waist, our chests pressed together, and his mouth claiming mine. I had the embarrassing urge to grind right into him like I was starved for sexual contact. Although technically I was.

Slade trailed his hand down from my neck over my chest. He stroked the curve of my breast with the same caution he’d showed in his initial kisses, and then cupped it completely when I didn’t recoil. His thumb swiveled over my nipple through the layers of fabric, and I let out a needy sound into his heated mouth.

He massaged my breast more eagerly, his mouth outright plundering mine, and the intensity of the moment was so overwhelming that I didn’t fully register the creak of the stairs until a few seconds after the sound had first reached my ears.

I jerked back, sliding off Slade’s lap. “Someone’s coming up.”

My gaze darted toward the door, half anticipating one of the other guys glancing in, realizing what we’d been up to from the guilty flush burned into my cheeks.

Slade nuzzled the side of my head. “I know Logan can put on a scary front, but you don’t need to be afraid of him getting angry. I survived his dance-floor interruption just fine.”

The amusement in his tone brought my attention back to him. “Are you only doing this to irritate Logan?”

Slade laughed. “Riling him up is a benefit, sure. Can’t let him get too cocky.”

All the heat fled my body in the wake of a wash of cold. I might not have made commitments to anyone, including Slade—I might have figured this could just be fun in the moment—but the admission horrified me more than I’d expected. I’d assumed Slade was at least into it because he enjoyed making out withme, not because of how his friends would react.

I pushed myself farther away from him on the bed, my blush all embarrassment now, my stance tensing awkwardly. “We’d better stop then, because I actually likeyou.”

Slade froze, looking oddly surprised, and then caught my hand. He studied my expression with unexpected intensity. “I didn’t mean I don’t like you, Maddie. I was just kidding around about the Logan thing. Hell, I think you’re amazing.”

“Oh.” I had no idea how to feel, but the sincerity in his voice set off a warm glow inside me. I couldn’t help smiling, even though I was still confused. “Well… good.”

He arched his eyebrows, more of his usual playfulness coming back. “I promise anything that happens between us is going to be about you and me and how awesome you are, not anyone else. And if you’re actually up for more than just an occasional fun distraction…”

Before I could decide how to respond to that, Dexter’s voice carried up the stairs. “Hey, guys, you’d better take a look at this.”
