My pulse leapt. Dexter had discovered a secret compartment after all. Ithadbeen a puzzle box.

And there was something in the compartment. A slip of paper, looking like it was a corner torn off a larger sheet, with faded black pen ink scrawled across it.

I picked up the box and plucked the slip of paper out of the compartment. That was my dad’s handwriting. I still had a few notes he’d written to me during my elementary school days, little messages of encouragement he’d randomly tuck inside my lunch box. I’d have recognized his arched letters anywhere.

The actual writing didn’t make much sense to me. It was an address, but not one I was familiar with. No place I’d ever gone; not a street name I had any associations with.

Why had Dad written it down? Why had he felt the need to hide it away in this box in a super-secret drawer?

Did this have something to do with the reason the box had been stolen in the first place? Had those gangsters been looking for something like this inside it?

They hadn’t found it… but the Vigil guys had. They’d left in a huge hurry afterward.Theythought it was important—and they’d taken off to investigate without even letting me know.

Maybe they’d figured I wouldn’t be interested in my current mood, but the knowledge still annoyed me. My jaw clenching, I tucked the paper into my pocket, hugged the box to my chest, and dashed out of the office. All my thoughts narrowed down to getting to my car so I could uncover this final mystery and how my dad factored into it before I lost my chance.
